We were watching TV1 News, not because it's any less depressing than TV3's, but because their Weather forecasts are more informative. I guess there's no need to switch over to TV3 any more. Might as well go direct to YouTube & TED et al.

Our can-do attitude and ability to fix things with or without No 8 wire is(or was*) something to be proud of. The way kiwis can front up to the rich and powerful and see past the bombast to the bloke behind.
* hopefully we haven't lost it in this age of throw away technology and unfixable cars. We might need it very much if/when the global finance bubble bursts.

That's why it should be more properly termed 'lame-stream media' LSM.
It's blindingly obvious that all our media (& politicians) are captive to corporates. This week's offering from George Monbiot talks of Britain's woes on the subject but they are clearly applicable to New Zild. It's dismaying to find that we are world leaders in the equality gap. Presumably because our super rich are somewhat less blatant about their excesses compared to UK or US.

What surprises me is that confronted with a Poly who just refuses to answer questions or blatantly prevaricates, so-called journalists just roll over and piss in the air. It should immediately set alarum bells ringing "what is this bastard trying to hide?" "Go for his jugular!!"
To be fair, they may be constrained by higher-ups who don't want to rock the boat or who are sucking up to a teat somewhere pulling them off the story. It's a sad commentary on modern media. -

There could be all sorts of reasons why you are unaware of the existence of this hidden volume they're on about. The drive or computer is second hand, you had a virus a few months ago, other people use the computer.....
The other thought is that dodgy activities don't typically take up much space, a few documents, some plans, photos, etc could fit onto a Micro-SD. Even if they are on the hard drive, a 1GB hidden volume would be hard to spot in the clutter of a Terabyte drive. This MacBook Pro has over 1.5 million files according to SuperDuper, that's a lot of hay to find 1 needle. -
If a candidate doesn't identify his or her address and a check in phonebooks and the 'net fails to locate them, they're automatically excluded for 'lack of contactability' at the very least.
Could be a good tag on their posters too. "Not from round hereabouts!!" It's time this sort of detail was drawn to the attention of citizens. Heaven knows we have little enough information to judge their value as representatives. -
I've driven through the area a few times, to check out the home I lived in as a kiddie and to visit schools and a factory still operating in the area. It's a depressing jungle of shattered roads with detours on detours as the CCC tries to repair infrastructure, hardly surprising that locals don't choose to go rubber-necking.
Let's not forget those west of Hagley. While most houses in the north and west needed only minor repairs, I have several relatives and friends whose homes were totalled, particularly if they lived near the many streams and rivers that lace the suburbs. -

At the time I didn't think my head hit the road that hard. However, when I checked the helmet 6 weeks later I got a hell of a a surprise to find a whacking great crack right through it.
I shudder to think what might have happened if I hadn't been wearing my lid.I worked in a Lab where helmets were tested and it is VERY clear that if you fall or get knocked off your bike you should replace your helmet. Over & over they demonstrated that even when the owner was convinced that hadn't hit their head, tests on the helmet showed they had and the helmet had sacrificed itself protecting their brain. More important it was FAR less able to protect them if they continued to use it and have another accident. It didn't matter how cheap or expensive the helmet was.
Re the fears around helmets and hair: if you want to see messed up hair, check out the head injuries ward. Having 3/4 of your head shaved REALLY ruins your hair-do!
