Although I agree with, well, everything you just said, one service I can't see being easily replaced by institutions is that of student advocacy, which is sort of inherently adversarial - "Uni gone done a bad thing, we gonna help you out."
I don't doubt that most services currently provided with various degrees of success by unions could be duplicated by Universities - but will they bother? It'll be interesting to see how student media holds up. I'd hate to see it go, as it's a pretty useful proving ground for the journalist-blogger-data analysts of the future.

Thanks for this, Russell. There's a lot here that needed to be said - and, as far as I can tell, wasn't being said anywhere else.

Alright, so that's the detailed and incisive analysis out of the way. Let's get down to hard opinions. What do you rate this budget out of ten?

It’s… beautiful.
Although, as Tom says, it will be interesting to see if my red-green colourblind brother even notices there’s anything on the screen.
I’m also looking forward to the analysis so I can internalise Keith’s opinions and regurgitate them at leisure.

I'm glad to see that the first few minutes of Perigo are exactly what I expected when I first heard about the show - a televised SOLO press release, inexplicably filmed in what appears to be a set for a low-rent production of Something Funny Happened On The Way To The Forum.
On topic: For what it's worth, I watched both Media 7 and Backbenchers, and I'd be sorry to see them go. I hope to see them with new homes. (What I'd really like is to see TVNZ survive, but I guess that's pretty unlikely.)

I think, like a lot of loony would-be pundits he defines himself entirely by what he opposes. He hates on a thing and is at pains to point out "Hey, that thing? The thing that I hate? I'm not like that at all. Not even a little. Nup. I'm the opposite." Leaves infinite wriggle room as to what he actually believes.

“Without a clear indication of the author’s intent, it is difficult or impossible to tell the difference between sincere extremism and the parody of extremism”
From the Wikipedia entry on Poe’s Law
I’m surprised Redbaiter (and Conservapedia) aren’t among the citations.

Sorry for the late post, but I just wanted to say I'm really rather gutted. TVNZ 7 was basically the only channel I ever watched, and it had a great crop of shows. It was fantastic to see so much homegrown, intelligent stuff. And of course National national'd all over it. Such a shame.
All the best, Russell. -
Oh, goddammit, I just gave Muriel Newman money. Bought that Living Off The Smell Of An Oily Rag budgeting advice book today, and it turns out she's the co-authors. Perhaps her more whacked-out ramblings are the result of taking her own advice a bit too literally.

What caycos said. Graham's analysis, despite the fact that it's astute and, well, right, won't wash with people who simply see MMP as a vehicle for weirdos, largely because (especially in the early days) the media couldn't resist the urge to portray it that way. Remember the news items that couldn't contain their glee about Nandor Tanczos wearing a hemp suit, or skateboarding, or smoking the weeds, or anything? Because that's how an alarmingly large swathe of Average Voting New Zealanders see it, I'd say.
