  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

Hmmph. Well, I'm a 35 on that test, but some of the questions seemed a bit daft to me. For example, I'm not good at remembering people's names, but I'm good at remembering the patterns of vowels and consonants in their names. With any luck, I'll come up with the right name that matches the pattern, but I've been wrong so many times that I usually don't risk it.

And as coincidence would have it, just this week at my workplace a group of us were asked "for fun" to do the Myers-Briggs personality test and report the results to each other. So I'm an INFJ, whose description at http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/myers-briggs/infj.htm seems to be pretty much on the button.

Oh! Was I supposed to show some interest in the chit-chat here? (Tee hee!)

BTW, car license plate of the week, seen as I was ruminating about running for office for the board of directors of the local transit authority because our bus service has gone all to hell: UWUDLUZ. (It's not like I actively look for omens and signs!)

I guess what I can't reconcile with that test score is that I love serendipity. Maybe I lied.

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

I remember rhythmic gymnastics at primary school in the 50s--love, love, loved it. For some reason, the NFU short made me think of my favorite TV ad of all time. It's 3 minutes long, and has disappeared from our screens now that the bank has a new logo and a new ad campaign that consists of account managers meeting up with their clients in trains, glass elevators, and on ferries in Hong Kong harbor. (All of which smacks of shady deals, if you ask me.)

Hula is, of course, a class of rhythmic gymnastics all its own.

  • Southerly: The Problem With Religion,

Well, here in the States, religion--as with everything else--can be "got" for a price.

Ah, dolt! Where is thy sting?
(Sorry if someone else has already said this; don't have time to read all the replies, cos I'm at work being stared at strangely for laughing out loud!)

  • Speaker: Good Times on High Street,

Ah, AK79. No finer commute song as the Transbay bus travels between Oakland and San Francisco than Proud Scum's Suicide! That beat is just made for bridge struts passing by. I'd post a video on YouTube to prove it but I'd just get done for copyright infringement, I suppose. :)

  • Busytown: No news is good news,

Here is a link to a news conference given yesterday by reporters who lost their jobs when the Denver Rocky Mountain News was recently closed down. They are launching their own online news website, and if they get 50,000 subscribers at $4.99 a month by 23 April, it will become a reality:

In the meantime, they continue publishing at http://www.iwantmyrocky.com/

  • Current Status: Holidays,

There were cheerios, sausage rolls, and beer. Good to see the old ways kept up.

Lucky bastard! Here in the States the nearest thing to a cheerio is something called a Vienna Sausage and it comes in a tin. (That's if you disregard a breakfast cereal called Cheerios.) As for sausage rolls... there's a reason US cops are lampooned for eating donuts--savouries are not usual fare here. Was there lots of Wattie's tomato sauce to dip the delectables in? Oh, they're owned by Heinz now?

And an extra note on tui... they are great mimics. I used to live near Pukekura Park in New Plymouth, and trained a tui that lived near my flat to follow me down a park trail by getting it to mimic some tuneless tune I whistled as I walked along.

  • Southerly: Primary School for Beginners,

Well, I don't know what changed or when, but gender was not an issue when it came to getting the strap in my early days in the primers. I got the strap twice from Miss Crab while I was still in Tiny Tots, which was 1957.

My favorite parts of primary school were the lovely wooden speakers high up on the wall from which emanated the Broadcasts to Schools, and the gorgeous artwork on the covers of the music books that we used along with the broadcasts.

And the artwork for the School Journal, online here:
    http://www.natlib.govt.nz/collections/online-exhibitions/school-journal

Oh, and in my last year of primary school, getting to design a house and make a model of it because I'd passed all the arithmetic tests ahead of schedule.

I hope that these days, kids in small town schools have teachers with the nouse to help them discover that actually being a musician, a graphic designer, or an architect is within the realm of possibility, and that the education system supports their efforts.

  • Legal Beagle: If it's Sunday...,

It's finally back. Peter Jennings may no longer be with us, but World News with Charles Gibson will air nightly at 5:10 and 11:35. In a country where every fatal car accident gets a mention on the six o'clock news, it's fantastic that New Zealanders will again see network news as it is supposed to be done. And in 25 minutes.

Don't get too excited. Just this week Charlie "Mr Trustworthy" Gibson said categorically that there was only one billboard on display in Moscow in the lead-up to the weekend's election, by way of saying that it wasn't a free election.

Any number of news items on France24, the BBC, and Russia Today during the previous two weeks had clearly shown billboards for other candidates. Not that those candidates were likely to win, but when the promo for your show says: "You have to be fair, you have to be credible, and you have to get it right", you kind of have to live up to it, don't you think?

Also, Schieffer is retiring this year, so enjoy him while you can!
