What really gets me is the Treasury secretary cheer-leading govt thinking on education. I thought these guys were supposed to be apolitical, and what does he know about education?

Having read the speech, Cunliffe says 'here is the problem' - neo-liberalism. Ok, that's the problem, what solutions did he offer beyond no asset sales and taking more control of the economy?
I agree neo-liberalism or 'trickle-down' is the problem here, and in the rest of the world. So instead of the rubbish our current government is dishing up; cronyism, corporate welfare, deficit-funded tax cuts for the rich, commodity exports and dog-whistle politics, people are looking for something different.
Shearer and/or Cunliffe should come up with the solutions now; looking after the middle class, changing the Reserve Bank Act to foster exports, tackling entitlement reform, money into research & education. They need to start promoting these policies now to provide real alternative at the next election.
In the meantime, NZ is just sliding away under a mountain of debt. -

Now, why should the police be concerned with anyone ‘saving face’?
I agree, but considering the politicians involved here, a so-called solution has been found for now but a mess has been left for someone else to resolve in the future.

Don't you think this decision is the most 'helpful' to get the saga off the news cycle, and everyone saves face?
Regarding the real problem with these tapes, they're saying somebody else will worry about that in the future. A typical stance considering who the main players are. -
Great post Russell. Thanks for the research and time because it was very enlightening.

Off to Timaru for dinner with the in-laws. Back home for the usual amount of visiting friends & relations who want the typical Central Otago holiday. For the last few weeks we have had the glorious weather we all crave for, long may it continue.

And me as well Jackie. I have never forgiven National for Muldoon. While fostering his populism, he dismantled Kirk's compulsory super scheme and then bankrupted the country. I am afraid the same is happening now.

Interesting you regard the Labour address flagged everytime PG was featured. He speaks ponderously and accurately I know, but I would trust him long before his opponent.

At least with RNZ you get balance. Ok, Mercep and Robinson do not go for the jugular when interviewing, but Ferguson who is on Morning Report just now does have formidable interviewing skills. MR is the only news program worth listening to, the rest is full of pap.
By financially strangling RNZ and not being available for interviews, I suppose the govt can keep the voters in the fog longer. -
So Russell and Damian, looking into your crystal balls, after 2012 there will be no public television, no scrutiny of the media, maybe some exploration of politics and Freeview being gutted. Is that about right?
