And an actual music video -- 'Plastic Magic', featuring Esther Stephens
Is it just me thinking that - in the bath scene in this video - Tom Scott looks like a morph between Andrew Fagan and Chris Knox? Spooky, though not inappropriate.

Hard News: Fame Friday, in reply to
Since we're on Home Brew, this* programme was strangely affecting.
(There were other eps, but I can't find them).*RNZ: Adventures in Musicland: Tom Scott in South East Asia
Hi, this was broadcast on the radio in two parts, but is online as one, so that's the full Tom Travelogue right there... there have been other shows in the 'Adventures in Musicland' series, but I think this is probably what you mean..?
cheers -
Homebrew finally get NZoA funding… and this is what they spend it on. Their layers upon layers of subversion crack me up. That video lives in a special subgenre with this one: the one by The Sneaks.
Which also reminds of Peter Jefferies tale of his mum financing some early recording after a good day at the races. I doubt it was this (can’t recall right now) which is one of my faves.
That tune was later recycled for this better known (but not as great – to me) song:
The legit video of which is still being blocked by Warner Music Group – even though they do not own it. hopefully the links work here… happy day.
Nah, you totally bollocksed them up ;-) But I fixed them, For YouTube vids, just post in the URL (i.e.: not the short one) and they automatically embed and for making links, study the instructions again … RB

(Russell, maybe you could edit that link in the first post please? - I'm too late)

Hard News: Flying Nun: Thirtysomething, in reply to
Sorry - my stupid fingers:
-
Sorry if this is too cheeky Russell, but I’m rather pleased that – with the agreement of publishers Mushroom Music and Native Tongue, as well as Roger & Flying Nun Records – Radio NZ is able to make this documentary series available for free download/podcast for the very first time. (even though its not new, or perfectly executed)
Now… on with the stories… -
Field Theory: It's not yours, but you…, in reply to
By that standard, almost anything that is made overseas is neither common nor generic. The first person to start making it gets a default license to use the name, to the exclusion of all others.
- Yeah, that's the bit I don't get - Is there not some sort of over-arching international trade mark HQ/clearing house to ajudicate this stuff? - Otherwise what will happen with imported beer (correctly) labelled Radler, but now 'illegal' in NZ?
Someone should flood the market with it... mwa ha ha haaaaar.
- right, I'm off for some home-made cider. Or stout. or maybe both. (hmmm... who has got the trade mark on Stout I wonder?)

Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie, in reply to
Can anyone (maybe who can view the video) indicate if Arie has actually laid an assault complaint with Police
- in the story Arie said (from memory) that he was too scared to lay a complaint - too scared to go out anymore, and very, very scared of going to jail.
Such a sad story - and incomprehensible response from the NZ Police - it appears they were aware almost straight away that there were special circumstances around Arie's behaviour, but they did not choose to take those into consideration.
Can kind of see how that might happen in the heat of the moment - not right/good, but human mistake in high-stress circumstances.
But for it to be supported and perpetuated by more senior staff/ management for so long... incomprehensible.
Maybe there is even more to it we don't know yet.OTOH Arie came across so well - what a lovely man. I hope his dreams for the future (to become an electrician and own a house where he can display his collection of electrical fixtures) are realised. I suspect there will now be many people willing to offer him any help he might need.
There really has been some excellent public service television this week (Cigerettes, Leaky Homes, Arie - to name some on commercial free-to-air) Perhaps the charter finally becoming evident? - best we put a stop to it.

I was very privileged to be included with the 30 or so WN people invited to an Internet NZ breakfast talk by Prof. Lessig on Saturday, where he covered similar ground to this Radio NZ interview:
http://www.radionz.co.nz/music101
One slightly depressing thing was Lessig’s suggestion that there was not much point in NZ trying to negotiate to improve the terms of the TPPA, but that instead interested parties should utilise ‘blue-sky’ planning to re-write copyright law/ treaties etc to come into effect so far into the future that current USA lobbyists are not interested.
I was undoubtedly the most naïve person in the room, but does anyone think the TPPA is worth the risk/cost? I just don’t get it. -
Legal Beagle: Voting Referendum: Jus' Sayin', in reply to
apparently we’re all a bit too dumb to understand MMP, so shouldn’t we just make it easier? – like FPP! winners/losers – easy!
- FPP isn’t all that easy to understand
I agree - I was paraphrasing the question line taken in the interview, rather than expressing my opinion.
