  • Hard News: Privacy and the Public Interest, in reply to Bruce Ward,

You're right, I'm making assumptions (based on the fact it's a political party). Also listening to Hooton and Boag and a few others. Sure people are in denial now, but once the election is out of the way, i think there'll be a lot of acrimony. The potential damage here to National is massive and there will inevitably be some very pissed off people in the party. Even without genuine outrage there will be opportunists looking to maneuver closer to leadership.
Mind you, i do function on the assumption that people are generally decent… (and some of them clearly are not)

  • Hard News: Privacy and the Public Interest,

The quiet voice in all this has been outrage within the National Party. (outrage that must extend from members and supporters to some of the more recently quiet front benchers)
Whatever happens at the election, National could suffer internal damage on a level with what happened to Labour post-Rogernomics. If the election returns National to government, with a possible by-election in Papakura (and subsequent Winston fueled public outrage at the cost to tax payers), it's not going to be an easy three years.

  • Speaker: Telling Our Own Tales,

Thanks for that Gerard. We all need to be reminded that our audiences aren't just ourselves (particularly us Aucklanders). I look forward to seeing the footage sometime.

  • Hard News: We can do better than this,

You are right, the Simon Lusk chapter is one that has been under discussed in the media, but it's one that we can assume has the phones going hot in the National Party.
Having read all the outrage and anger in commentary and blogs from the left, it would be fascinating to have insight into the internal angst.
They're not going to wash their laundry in public this close to an election, but with a sense of betrayal by people outside the National Party machine this palpable, I can only imagine how moderate National Party members, and those betrayed in the Party Machine must feel.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if a large number of stunned party members began demanding a clean up of the National Party.

  • Hard News: Auckland's future: Keep calm,…, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

As an aside, there's a great article about lost opportunities in that 1858 decision in the latest Harpers Magazine (or maybe LRB?) -exploring the downside of committing to said waste system. Losing a chance to use solids in agriculture, instead concreting up streams and rivers and flushing it all out to sea. Also flushing toilets geysering bacteria up into the air and spreading disease. Interesting.

  • Hard News: Two roads lead to the city,

I'd like to see the trees stay too, but there really does seem to be a 1 step forward 2 step back element to any cycling progress in the city, & i agree the soccer morning insanity is crazy, and there again the problem is compounded by facilities not providing secure bike racks. How hard can it be...

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The Godfather…,

Nice to be reminded of Marie and the Atom. I remember a performance around that time with Kiwi Animal at the synagogue/asb. Hammers, nails, balloons and a song of anti-nuke visit rhyming chanting 'submarine urine submarine urine'
