As for girls with mother's surnames, boys with fathers's, I am not keen on dividing my family up along gendered lines. It seems counterproductive if you want a feminist, non-patriarchal family. Plus, what if you get children of only one gender? Both mine are female.

We're not married and haven't changed our surnames. Our children have our surnames double barreled. Our local school is middle class, decile 10 and so forth, and there are hardly any kids with double-barrel names. I'd love to know where all those other families are!

This made me laugh so much, thanks David.
My own little sorry tale - second leg of a trip to Paris with out 16 month old involved her having a sinus infection (which we didn't know about at the time). I had to hold her standing up for 7 hours from Singapore to Paris to prevent her screaming. It had to be me and it had to be standing. No doubt the worst experience of my life. Childbirth was easier.

That’s nice for you but when people/media/etc are sending messages to my children on a constant basis I feel bound to respond to the message and the people sending them. It's one way for me to protect my children.
