"But of course that's just music, which as those bestowed with the Gift of Comedy would doubtless point out, is nowhere near as hard as writing jokes for the stage... nothing is, apparently."
There are few who claim this, one artform is another is another, HOWEVER, the difficulty with comedy is there is only one acceptable emotional outcome from a joke - humour/mirth. Songs can be sad, happy, moving etc etc meaning that the scope of material is slightly wider.
Reuters print the same thing in multiple newspapers, bands play the same songs, actors perform in the same plays for years on end. You deliver the best material you can, to ensure the audience has the best time. Does he cater to you who has seen him 3 times? And thus risk doing material that isn't that funny or does he perform his older stuff which he knows is hilarious, that's up to each comic.

I do standup and have a show next week in this year's festival (self advertising done now) and I can tell you that writing material for this malarkey is one of the hardest things I've done in the world. Try and write your own joke then tell it to your co-workers around the water cooler, see how funny it is.
I know Brendhan reasonably well and he always maintained that this show was basically a greatest hits with a few new bits added in (thus the ironic title of the Emperor's New Show). Also, the Gala is basically an advertisement for your own show to get as many people to come as possible (incidentally, wasn't Alex Hawley good? Yes he was AND he's in my show next week).
As a Wellington Comic we are heavily pressured to write new material regularly because our audience doesn't tend to vary much, up in Auckland they have a much higher turnover rate so polish the same joke until it's shiny and brilliant. -

You do Karate Party Ben? I write reviews for that site via Noor and Roger.
Crazy small world.

*sigh* I don't know why I bother but I try and I try to keep my arguments civil in Kiwiblog but for some reason someone always wades in with abuse. As though this somehow proves their cause.
I don't think a code of conduct will count for anything though, those who already follow polite guidelines will say "yeah sure why not" and those who do not will just continue on their merry way with a "you can't tell me what to do, this is a left wing conspiracy put forward by *insert hilarious Labour misspelling here* and Klarkkk.

The Govt Dept I work for is so archaic, we use Lotus Notes. Your new advertising system has made the pages stall, freeze and crash Lotus for a couple of minutes each times it loads.
This saddens me. -
Is it positive reinforcement? Do they reward them after the act? Or is it more positive coercion?
I'm not sure if I gave my dog the biscuit first if he'd sit...
