Ignoring words (or even redacting them) doesn't make them go away.
Best we know the extent of their usage to gauge where they may be heading, or leading us
The Pedant Posse rides again -
Damn those 'Dictionaryans',
we'll head 'em off at the parse!I completely missed the voting process
- good to see 'Virtue signalling' got into the Top Ten, though. -
How about 'Ross Asset Management'
or am I mixing my scandals and years...? -
For word (or phrase) of the year I nominate:
'Virtue signalling' - strongly used by the inadequate to deflect self-judgement.Plus a special mention to the punctuation mark of the year : !
aka the humble exclamation mark, the screamer, a slammer if you like - once of a solitary persuasion, they now cluster round the end of sentences like so many rubberneckers at an accident!!! -
I see this book is finally out:
Time flowing backwards: a memoir
Graeme Jefferies
Mosaic Press (2018)
This book is co-published with Assembly House BooksThis memoir is the fascinating and revealing story of Graeme Jefferies - one of the most inventive and influential musicians to emerge from New Zealand's vibrant independent music scene in the 1980s. Time Flowing Backwards spans over three decades of Jefferies career spent with bands Nocturnal Projections, This Kind of Punishment, and The Cakekitchen as well as a solo artist.
In a candid and in-depth style, Jefferies recounts his recording and songwriting process along with riveting tales from incident-filled tours with the likes of Pavement, Cat Power and the Mountain Goats.
This truly original and inimitable inside story highlights intense collaboration and DIY innovation, records made in hallways and houses rather than plush studios and a dedication to produce challenging and remarkable songs.

NZH: "He said the pair would be required to take the stand for up to an hour during trial."
Newsroom: "The most efficient way of eliciting answers was for Graham and Slater to "attend court for up to one day to be orally examined.""When can we start chanting "Lock 'em up!"

Parkes and Recreation
Head on over to Bandcamp for the excellent new album ’Little Rapids’ from Blair Parkes and Cardigan Bay
Show some love and buy the album !!Heck go and get ’Always Running ‘ his solo album as well – you will be well aurally rewarded by both.
Why some of these tracks haven’t been picked up by other radio stations than the Student Radio stations is beyond me… – But worth noting that at least 3 tracks off ’Always Running’ have been top ten songs on those stations – and RDU even put a track on one of their recent limited edition single releases.
