  • Stories: Life in Books,

Why do they always send the poor?

Because there's plenty more where they came from. And it does them good.

Actually, the UK did send Prince Andy to the Falklands.

I've idly wondered now & then whatever happened to the good old tradition of leaders actually leading their troops into battle?

Might make for a boom in diplomacy.

    "I saw Sam Hunt yesterday...
The waves pushed pebbles up Oriental Bay"

I have seen two great Sam Hunt impersonations in my day, one by Brian Sergeant, and the other by Peter Hambleton (coincidentally, I was at college with both). The lines above are the beginning of Hambleton's schtick, from a capping revue. For the life of me I can't remember where I saw Sergeant do his. Maybe another capping revue

I just bridle at the thought in NZ that being a poet is a career, but for some I know it is - due to grants, residencies, competitions and so on. I need to get over it.

Ah... you may be reading more in what I said than I lazily intended. McCormack & Sam Hunt, through the 80s, would tour nationwide reading poems, singing songs, telling jokes, drinking & smoking lots. They were hilarious.

Maybe not so much a career as a calling :)

I didn't think you could retire from being a poet

By all means make your own mind up on McCormack's subsequent career.
