Same with drinking. Just cos it wasn't on telly, doesn't mean that young folk weren't partying till they puked.
Interestingly when all the hoopla happened around New years, my 'fatherly' tendencies fuelled my internal 'moral panic' and it all seemed terrible and so different from my yoof.
But since then, and in discussions with others, I've come to realise that mostly what has changed is the awareness and media coverage.
In my home town a good proportion of the males in my age group are lying in the local cemeteries from motorcycle and car accidents, many involving alcohol. This happened before all the media coverage, guilt inducing nanny state legislation and justifications for curtailing civil liberties.
Given that teenagers will find alcohol one way or another during after match functions for balls, or whatever, would you rather they did it in the car down at Takapuna beach, or under the supervision of security guards, parents and other responsible adults, with a mini bus home afterwards?

I didn't put it that way, PJ did, which I found after you mentioned it.
Anyway, I did a good job of deflecting aye? You can tell me to fuck off now too if it makes you feel better. I'm just waiting for Craig to do the same.

P J O'Rourke.
Why I am a conservative.
There is no virtue in compulsory government charity, and there is no virtue in advocating it. A politician who portrays himself as caring and sensitive because he wants to expand the government's charitable programs is merely saying that he is willing to do good with other people's money. Well, who isn't? And a voter who takes pride in supporting such programs is telling us that he will do good with his own money— if a gun is held to his head.
'How to Explain Conservatism to Your Squishy Liberal Friends: Individualism 'R' Us'So yes, ironic, right? Ok, it's a Wiki-quote, but I did laugh.

Oh dear, Gio and Craig are having a slag off. But seriously Gio.
It's a core conservative belief: that all people are bastards.
That's not up to your usual standard, although I expect you were being a little ironic? I can see how this is personal for you, and I wouldn't envy your circumstances at all, but this was one or two pointy heads who run National's policy and monetary decisions, not every person who has conservative leanings. 'We', the royal 'we' don't actually think all people are bastards. I do think people who rort the system, get away with trivial fines and sentences, and roll on to destroy more innocent peoples lives are bastards. We seem to have a few of those in fair old New Zealand at present.
And Craig, just stop it, will you. We're supposed to be adults after all. But if anyone is giving odds, I back the ninjas to come from outta nowhere and clean up.

I'm only watching Lost out of sheer bloodymindedness now.
My bloodymindedness was replaced by 'will you just hurry up and die, FFS, your character is done already!' in about season 3.

The doctor who was on TV3 news referred to vomiting as the bodies natural defence mechanisms. I don't recall there being any evidence of an association with an alcohol company. And there was a report around New Year's in a camp in Nelson which showed a youthful up-chuck.

Behold the Irish Coffin Box.
Pull the other one. No, I mean the third from the left.

Clearly you need this.
That would be sooo cool. It would also be cool if FB and Twitter had an 'Online Reputation Enhancement' algorithm that grades posts on the basis of;
10= You're about to become Stephen Fry.
1= Your continued irrelevance is guaranteed. In fact, you just lost 10 followers and have no friends.That would be gold (ORE, get it?)
[ORE=1]

Are we retro, ironic, or just too old to keep up?
I object. Now, could someone remind me what I'm objecting to.
In my defence, it was in conjunction with some brand spanking new music that is pretty much hot off the press. Anyway, we should always honour our forebears, especially as we rapidly become someone else's.
