  • Up Front: All Together Now,

name suppression has been ordered at the request of the victim

...In the case of the prominent entertainer, that's not what was reported, on the contrary, the victim expressed anger at being muzzled from outing the defendant.

Unfortunately you've misread -- deliberately or not -- what Russell Brown wrote, which was:

In other cases, as I said, name suppression has been ordered...

i.e. no ALL. As in, "in some of the other cases, but not all". Big difference. In the case of the "prominent entertainer", Defence Counsel Ron Mansfield asked for it and the judge granted it.

  • Field Theory: The Sad News Springboks,

Ha ha, brilliant! (spoilers follow, probably)

If you were wondering the film does seem to allude to that rumour. In one scene Mandela converses with his officials about coming up with a way to for them to beat the All Blacks off the field and put them off their game.

When I saw the trailer, I had some kinda weird faux-epiphany. Of COURSE.. SA winning was seen as crucial to post-reconciliation nation-(re)building and so they couldn't POSSIBLY be allowed to lose. Of COURSE. It MUST be true.. and so on.

    Stoopid conspiracy theories :))

  • Up Front: All Together Now,

    Emma Hart:

I know that if someone says something I find really hurtful, and it upsets me to a point where I can't reply, I feel better when I see someone else speak up.

    Word.

    Dyan Campbell:

If a someone makes a complaint, surely that's enough? Doesn't that complaint require investigation? How could anything suggest that is was "reasonably possible that she gave her consent" despite her assertions to the contrary?

Probably displaying ignorance of legal stuff here but, perhaps something to do with the possibility of a false/spurious complaint?

One thing that makes me kinda sick/sad (and again probably demonstrating ignorance of legal stuff) is that at no point has anyone considered that the defence lawyer(s) could say "No, we won't introduce that chatroom log; it's irrelevant and/or unethical." We all just expect the worst from them. Depressing.

New twist in Matthew James Sloan 'technical rape' case

prosecutors said they had made a "mistake" in their handling of the case.

They insisted there had been no consensual sex between the pair and that the woman had "feigned sleep" in the hope Sloan would cease performing sex acts upon her.

Prosecution bungle allows man to change plea in rape case

In July, defence counsel Laura Finnegan told the District Court that Sloan's alleged victim went with him into the parklands and consented to sex acts.

She said Sloan continued to perform sex acts after noticing the woman appeared to be unconscious.

At the time prosecutors had agreed to those facts, but a month later admitted the victim was never unconscious and did not consent to sex with her attacker - instead they said the victim had pretended to be asleep in the hope that Sloan would stop.

Word. And that column is all kinds of offensive.

    And the comments beneath fascinating!

But that case is MUCH more complicated than the story those two links convey.

  • Radiation: Big bang theory,

It's not like characters in wheelchairs get that many roles in TV or film to start with.

I've thought a lot about this kind of thing ever since I saw post-accident Christopher Reeve as the male lead in the remake of Rear Window.

    Also: Marlee Matlin.

I wish I had something more intelligent to add.

Breaking Bad was particularly awesome last night

My favourite television event for a dozen years, or at least since the Sopranos. I have had to devour the entire thing in an *coff* out-of-band fashion.

    specially the opening song

Indeed. Also trying to obtain the "Breaking Bad Pirate SoundtracK", whatever that may turn out to be.
