There was a discussion about endangered species on the quality little TV3 programme Think Tank this morning. Featured the wise Mike Joy, among others. Worth watching on line if you can find it. Abut one third of 10,000 NZ species is currently threatened.

The same day the NS data was published there was a post on Facebook from a sad but resigned mother reporting that her local school had rejected the enrollment of her almost 5 year old autistic daughter. She had decided she hadn’t the energy to fight for the legal right of her daughter to attend the local school, and had found another more inclusive – although further away – school where her daughter could start her school career.
But the publishing of the NS league tables will only reinforce the efforts of a large proportion of schools to do everything possible to exclude students who might ‘damage’ their data.
I think some of us predicted this in December 2008, at the beginning of the NS saga.

Hard News: "Because we can", in reply to
That Black Triangle campaign on Facebook has a lot of very useful and interesting stuff about the welfare cuts in the UK, disability activism and political hypocrisy. We are following a couple of years behind but so many similarities.
There are also some enlightening answers from the Minister to written questions from NZ First's Barbara Stewart. Numbers are 6963-6972 http://www.parliament.nz/en-NZ/PB/Business/QWA/Default.htm?p=34&search=378174212 (seems very slow to load and find right page - so much for efficient e-government)
I fear the policy theory and practice do not match up.

My favourite young journalist, Alex Tarrant, also went to Vladivostok and Japan. It might have been his first big overseas trip with the PM. It would be interesting to hear his version.

Great submission. If you do talk to them in person the protocol is that you can assume they have read it – and they will have it in front of them on their laptops. So you can use this opportunity (5 mins in most select comms that I have been to lately) for emphasis or to make extra points. The members then have about 10 mins to ask for elaboration, and if it is well chaired most MPs will take the opportunity. Remember, they are just ordinary people – paid by us to represent us - and in my experience they are quite respectful of the democratic principles of the select committee process. It is quite likely that the line up will change on the day depending on who is available. (On the other hand there might be a queue of MPs wanting to be substitutes.)

Capture: Wellington? Well, I Would., in reply to
The old trains have mostly been replaced since 2010 - Johnsonville line the most recent a few months ago. But the best time for the Wellington Railway station is during the Sevens rugby tournament as it is crowded with normally conservative and restrained Welingtonians and their friends dressed up (or not so dressed) in absolutely anything. Don't have any photos, just vivid images in my head.

Wellington Railway station is a busy place. Contains a supermarket and university among other popular attractions. Not so much grime these days either, even the trains are new and shiny.

Thanks Chris, I knew I had seen him somewhere but not a Wellington memory. Saw him at that wonderful museum a few years ago.
