It's a bit rich when prohibitionists state that criminalizing cannabis by way of simply confiscating the drug when found in possession with no follow up plan, is some kind of 'harm reduction'. From personal experience it just seems to stimulate the market.

And if there had been a bit of work on drafting a half useful bill then a lot more of us would have voted for it. I don't know whether it was laziness or a lack of judgement on Metiria's part but frankly the bill presneted to parliament looked like it had been drafted by someone who had been high for weeks.
Dear Mr Mallard, please check your work for spelling mistakes before presenting it to the committee, and dearest Mr Mallard please improve education in the dual island constabulary to invite more reasonable jury verdicts.

Same goes for all condemnation, come to think of it. Waggling your finger at people doing their thing whatever it is seems to score more friends than it makes enemies. It doesn't matter how many people think the thing is OK, so long as those who think it isn't feel strongly enough, and the rest don't care.

I'm hoping you can review these dates and answer a simple question below.
a) 1853 - first election 1853
b) 1867 - Māori seats established, giving Māori four reserved seats in the lower house. There was no property qualification; thus Māori men gained universal suffrage before any other group of New Zealanders. However.
c) 1879 - Property requirement abolished. Universal suffrage granted for all men men over 21.
d) 1893 - Women given equal voting rights with men, making New Zealand the first nation in the world to allow adult women to vote.
e) 1919 - Women eligible to be elected to the House of Representatives
f) 1941 - Women eligible to be elected to the New Zealand Legislative Council (the Upper House of Parliament)
g) 1969 - Voting age lowered to 20.
f) 1974 - Voting age lowered to 18.
h) 1975 - Franchise extended to permanent residents of New Zealand, regardless of whether they have citizenship.
j) 1996 - Number of Māori seats increased to reflect Māori population.

In your opinion, at what point do you think New Zealand became what most people in the world would consider a democracy?
