Hard News: The Wellington Cables, in reply to
It’s interesting but is it worth compromising diplomatic confidentiality
Again, not to repeat myself or anything, but compromising diplomatic confidentiality isn't an unfortunate side-effect: it's the whole bloody point.

Has there ever in the course of history been an example of this tactic working?
Has it ever been tried? People cite Watergate as if it was the same thing - it wasn't. That was a proper criminal conspiracy, not the application of conspiratorial logic to the 'regular', non criminal workings of government.

Joe, it's quite possible the opposite result will occur too. Those affected by the leaks might beef up their security, so that future leaks are more difficult, and will make examples of the leakers, for intimidation. Neither of these are moves towards open governance.
Making the channels more secure intrinsically hinders communication, which is the whole point.

Probably too tiresome for the short attention span of bloggers, but zunguzzu
It's "Zunguzungu" and I linked to it days ago, but I understand that reading the whole discussion may be too tiresome for your attention span.

You put it differently. Your claim is that they "**justify releasing confidential information** on the basis that it is of great moral, historical or political importance". This buys into the idea that confidentiality (that is to say, secrecy) in the dealings of our elected representatives and public officers is the default and inherently just, correct course of action, as opposed to something that circumvents the consent of the governed and needs in turn to be justified. WikiLeaks emphatically makes no such representation.

Doesn't Wikileaks justify releasing confidential information on the basis that it is of great moral, historical or political importance?
No, it doesn't.

This is genius.
The casual use of the name Martin Bishop was pretty clever I thought.

Tom, Megan, Hadyn -- it'll save our kind sponsor some money if you three could nominate a joint delivery address for the courier.
I'm sure my house is somehow equidistant from all of theirs.

About a week or so ago, in the thread. Then you had to search the website for the form.

Hard News: We are all twatcocks now…, in reply to
I consider it more a PA System meme than a word that's entered the vocabulary of New Zealand English.
Not that there's anything wrong with that right? I for one would be pretty disappointed if we chose commonsensical but soul-sapping words like credit crunch every year. What are we, Herald readers?
