For less than $270 000 in Linwood you could have, say, this.
'fess up Emma - is that your house?

It reminds me of a second hand shop in Cuba Street that a few years back displayed a massive nazi flag near the entrance. When I protested that most people would find it incredibly offensive, the owner suggested I put my money where my outrage was: "for fifty bucks you can remove it from the shop".
It's possible the owner attended the National Lampoon School of Marketing. It's equally possible that 5 minutes after you bought it another would appear in its place, for $60.
"Sixty dollars?!"
"Oh yes, they're very popular - we've sold one already this morning" -
Air New Zealand is equipping 18 of its planes with ... the Panasonic X Series in-flight entertainment
Great, but can the airlines focus on screens that work? My screen died 30 minutes before the film concluded on a recent Singapore Air flight (11 hours). Naturally nothing could be done (damn why did I throw a hissy fit because someone 5 rows back had FILLED my overhead locker with all their carry-on luggage).
SIA had like 20 movies to choose from, plus TV shows. Remember when all you got was one or two movies projected on a screen up front that you couldn't always see because people kept getting up to pee?

You're right, it makes no sense. We should clearly be imposing a border carbon tax on imports from polluter nations.
As the European Union, led by France, is considering.
Oh, you mean an excuse to bring back __tarrifs __to protect local producers? Who's going to decide the formula* to decide who is a polluter/carbon criminal? There are plenty of UK mums who think our lamb in their supermarket chillers is a carbon crime.
*That should keep the UN busy for a few years. Kyoto3 anyone?

The WaPo story is interesting, but also reinforces the idea that Obama can't win because America is 'not ready for a Black President'. From Page 2 of the story:
In a letter to the editor published in a local paper, Tunkhannock Borough Mayor Norm Ball explained his support of Hillary Clinton this way: "Barack Hussein Obama and all of his talk will do nothing for our country. There is so much that people don't know about his upbringing in the Muslim world. His stepfather was a radical Muslim and the ranting of his minister against the white America, you can't convince me that some of that didn't rub off on him.
"No, I want a president that will salute our flag, and put their hand on the Bible when they take the oath of office."
That's the freakin Mayor ferchissakes! And he's willing to put it all in a letter and have it published!!

Because, if I recall correctly, they do a lot of promos and sponsorship with The Switched On Gardener and even had a competition to win a hydroponic wardrobe.
Damn! You mean that's how they make P?

(As an aside, I interviewed Jeremy Moon from Icebreaker a while back - he said it was easier to find a 'green' producer of his garments in China than it was in South Auckland)
Well he would say that wouldn't he? Much better than 'We went there because it was waaaay cheaper'. It's all well and good to find a 'green' producer in China but manufacturers considering outsourcing to need to verify the actual production methods their suppliers use.
Mattel and others learnt to their cost why one supplier was able to supply lead free painted toys at such a good price ...

One the one hand the company is talking about the loss of thousand of jobs to the region, on the other, they're threatening to take all the skilled workers overseas with them.
To be honest, if they leave and take the workers with them doesn't that solve our problems? We get to keep the power and we don't have pay Unemployment Benefits to the workers ... lets call their bluff!
Warning - rant follows....
You've just reminded me of a recent SouthPark episode ...
This just shows how insignificant we are. This volcano will spew out more pollution than all the automobiles ever made and yet we have the audacity to think we can control or change the weather. Quick someone put a catalytic converter on that volcano.
That's the comment someone left on this You Tube clip (below). Anyone care to argue that Volcanoes don't release more carbon into the atmosphere than we do?

In American supermarkets, you can buy isopropyl in one litre bottles. I'm fairly sure you can also get pseudo-ephedrine based cold tablets in American-sized packets, or at least you could until fairly recently. You can also get 5-HTP in the equivalent of Woolworths, which points to a thriving drug culture, I feel.
After visiting a Big Hospital in San Francisco 3 years ago I had to go across the road to the chemist to fill my prescription. I was dumbfounded to see that they were selling over-the-counter pseudo-ephedrine based cold tablets in cartons the size of large Weetbix boxes. I knew Americans like buying stuff in bulk (Costco sell giant chocolate muffins in trays of 36!) but this was ridiculous.
And yet still I picked up this monstrous box of cold tablets and turned it over slowly in my hands ... wondering, thinking: "I could make a dollar or two if I managed to get this back to Auckland"
