but see at as possibly better than our legal system.
He broke her back in four places. We're not talking about some minor-league assault involving bruises and a bleeding nose - he hit her until she fell over, then kicked her until he broke her spinal column in multiple places.
If that had gone to court, it is very unlikely, I imagine, that he would have been able to avoid a non-trivial amount of prison time. His $100,000 investment has doubtless repaid itself manifold, given his position as a TV personality; I doubt it's even a year's income.

But more exciting still is the increasing use of construction methods such as walls made of polystyrene sandwiched between two sheets of gyprock - cheap, mostly made of recyclables, easy to assemble, ready insulated...
I hope the recycled plastic isn't going to degrade in any way that would result in nasty gases permeating the house...

he's won the annual prize as well.
Really? I mean, isn't it still the same year in which Tea Ropati's defense to a rape charge was, "We were so wasted no-one knows who consented to what"?

Give the respect
I'm always prepared to give you the respect you so readily extend to others, Craig.

Oddly enough, the last Fairfax poll, iirc, has Labour ahead in Christchurch and Dunedin -- it's Auckland where they're really dying.
In an ironic reversal of the 1970s, where Muldoon could stay in power by fucking the country for rural electorates, while it appears National may be able to get into power by appealing to a similarly narrow constituency.
C'mon Craig, how do you really feel about Key?
Evasive.

government debt
Buck to the Muldoon years, then. Perhaps I should be thinking about living somewhere where my grandchildren won't be paying for tax cts and debt-driven spending for baby-boomers.

I, for one, would not be unhappy if the long-haul trucking biz went back to rail. Fewer amphetamine-fuelled nutters tailgating up the desert road would improve my quality of life.

Not that Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign didn't amply demonstrate that.
It did demonstrate you can get given a free pass for employing racism if you cry about sexism enough.

Like psychics these people seem to pander to the weak and the vulnerable and the gullible. Why is there no EU type protection here in NZ???
It's interested how some things manage to wiggle through these little loopholes. The entire food legislation shitstorm last year was a great example of that - an entire industry wanting to be able to claim theraputic benefits but throwing a shitfit at the idea of being required to demonstrate that their products actually, you know, do what they say.
unfortunately most of New Zealand's consumer protection law requires you decide you've been ripped off and make a complaint.

With each new penalty for over rates or behaviour or something equally ridiculous the freedom of expression that any sport thrives on is being turned into another set of rules by which we must conduct ourselves.
Please. If players didn't cynically knobble their bowling rates to cripple the opposition, there would be no need for formal regulation of over rates. You're confusing cause and effect.
