@Islander. Oh dear--that was a major mind lapse. Still,, Westland has so many beautiful lakes and Okarito deserves something more resounding than a lagoon.
We went by St. James Church in Franz too but it was locked, so I just had to imagine the scene of past foolishness!
On the homeward journey to the Waikato today,...and it is my birthday. Perhaps I will get a chance to drive...!

@Islander. Thought of you, as we passed by Okarito in the rain. Hope you got the soya/edamame seeds I posted along the way--I mailed them to Okarito rather than Whataroa (had a minor mind l;apse--blame it on an excess of Blenheim cherries).
Now in Wellington, after a two week circumference of the South Island, with visits to 20 small/independent cinemas along the way. Now I am thinking of how to put all this information together + adding in the North Island, in the most useful manner.
There will be gaps (Arrowtown, Akaroa) so I may be calling on the wisdom of folk here, in the coming months. -
On the homeward leg of a two week of the South Island (currently residing at the Camelot Motel in Chch), beginning in Collingwood and travelling south to Stewart Island. Along the way I have been seeking out independent /small cinemas (my 2011 research project is to set website devoted to such places) and I have been greatly heartened to find 16 great cinemas to date--in towns such as Hokitika, Wanaka and Geraldine. My travelling companions have been more interested in secondhand stores and there are treasures to be found there.
My son has been despatched on a plane back to Wellington and the 87 year old father-in-law on a plane to Nelson, so there is suddenly more legroom in the car. The highlight, so far, was most probably the deserted hilltops of the Bendigo Goldfield--and the sealions on the beach at Sugat Bay.
I would contact PA people in Chch but we are onwards to Picton on Friday and Bob is probably the beach. -
I suppose someone shouldn’t speak ill of the dead but whilst everyone is speaking so highly of Dutton, I was never greatly impressed nor aware of much generosity of spirit. In a couple of spats I had with him, he personalised everything mightily–so I was surprised by Vicky Hyde’s claim (in The Press) that he didn't.
Good to see PA bubbling along over these days–we are in the deep south (on to Stewart Island tomorrow) and flooded rivers and erratic reception are the norm.

I guess there are many more words to be said on this on this matter. It does make the explanations offered by Phillipa Boyens at the SPADA conference rather disingenuous.

....and the author of most extraordinary puns! Never to be outdone.

Thank you, Russell, for such a candid and interesting story. So much for us to learn.
Re Craig's comment on Avatar; the frequent claims that this film has a radical, anti-corporate and pro-environment message ignores the fact that it effectively inflated the annual profits of its parent company Newscorp (through 20th Century Fox)--arguably the exemplar of greedy, rapacious corporate power.

Finding fruitful employment for all these millions of people is a real consideration. I recall passing by an open trench in central Tokyo on a quietish Sunday night. In NZ, a barrier and a couple of hazard lights would suffice; in Tokyo it required four blokes standing around the trench waving torches + one policeman.
Still, encountering the hordes of salarymen in their identical drab suits can be a depressing experience.

Did you mean to write 'Stewart Island'. We are heading there for New Year and I do hope it is this exciting!

Is this 15 billion just government debt and/or private debt?
