  • Hard News: Standing up and calling bullshit,

Oh Idiot, I'm afraid that we of the global Jewish lobby have been poisoning your bagels with addictive mind control drugs for some time now.

  • Hard News: Standing up and calling bullshit,

is it racist or anti-Semitic to claim the Jewish lobby exudes more influence, globally, than, their Palestinian equivalent (whilst acknowledging The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is a crock)?

    Where to start?

First, is there a Jewish lobby? To my reasonably certain knowledge we are riven with internecine strife, and nobody gets to speak for everyone.

Second, what have Palestinians or global influence got to do with Peter Calder's claim? He didn't say the Jews get more juice in the press than Palestinians, he said that our "endless power" walked the corporate corridors to ring a bell on news desks.

Which brings me to the third thing, which is if you don't wish to invite charges of anti-Semitism, it would be wise not to couch your criticism in such evocative language. Assuming that this is the real Peter Calder here, I expect a professional writer could hardly be unaware of this.

Phil: no, it wasn't rhetorical -- I really was unsure whether it was the same Peter Calder, and wanted to know. But just so I could lower my estimation of the correct person, not in order to pursue beyond the bounds of PAS.

And apropos the idiot Grammar lads -- isn't part of the handwringing the Facebook angle? If the Internet isn't allowing pedophiles to teach young people to make bombs, it's seducing them into attention-seeking transgressiveness, in photos, on the internet, online, where all the bad stuff happens, not like good honest newsprint... Everything teenagers do can be made worse in a news report by appending the words "on the Internet". For example, your children are having sex -- on the internet!

When I was at secondary school, acquaintances of mine formed a punk band (prepare for thread crossover) called Hitler's Cock. Strangely, the Waikato Times did not report on this.

Hey, I don't want people to feel persecuted at work for things they say on their own time, even if they are hateful and stupid.

Certainly if the Herald can't operate without Jewish operatives hounding innocent journos, I think we should be told.

The unsayable thing is that the endless power of the Jewish community, whose spokespeople walk caroeted corridors of the corporate world not the mean streets) to maintain the outrage rings bells on newsdesks.

You seem to have managed to say it quite easily, but in fact I think it's not so much unsayable as implausible. David Zwartz is a busy man but he can't be everywhere, and in the cases in point, I think you'll find that the newsdesks were ringing the bells in our community seeking comment -- hardly a surprising thing for them to do, as Russell has pointed out.

On another point, things offensive to Maori increasingly DO get coverage, and ironically particularly where burlesques of the haka are concerned. Have you spent the last decade in a bubble?

As for the endless power patrolling carpeted corporate corridors -- are you fucking insane? Is there anything to that apart from Jew-hating conspiracy tropes? If so, why not just say that? My blood pressure thanks you.

  • Hard News: Dunce Dunce Revolution,

Has anyone got a seismograph set up near Beeby's grave? With all these earthquakes recently, and these latest reports of assaults on our education system, I'm beginning to wonder whether the rotational force of his spinning might be disturbing the Alpine fault.

... the education system suffered from undue centralisation and conformity and should open itself to variation, experiment and change. The abolition of the proficiency examination in 1937 held out hope for primary schooling responsive to the range of children’s abilities. But the exclusionary nature of secondary and university education was at odds with the country’s democratic ethos, its economic conditions, and the expectation of parents that formal education should enable their children to get on in life. All young people had a right to continuing education not because they were especially brilliant academically but because they were citizens of a democracy. Scholarly ideals must of course be maintained but the university colleges should broaden the range of their teaching and the composition of their student enrolments. Beeby also foresaw the need for technical schools to take up the vocational and cultural education of apprentices and technician trainees, in order to prevent a national crisis arising from shortages of skilled labour.

Also, to the barricades, my friends. Fuck this. I have a great supply of bottles, both full and empty. I'm not planning on waiting for Phil Goff to decide to scrape the gloss off himself. I promise that should a National party member advocate these policies to me personally, I will punch them in the face*. Do you likewise, if not better.

*rhetorical flourish. Violence is wrong, except in self-defence, ok?

  • Hard News: Getting Across,

Yamis: have you see "Auckland, City of cars?"

It debunks the population density and the cost arguments pretty well, I think.
