Hard News: Narcissists and bullies, in reply to
It is a truism that what really pisses of the average punter is hypocrisy.
Rudeness rankles with me a little.
There are a lot of people here who manage to their disagreements with one another politely and respectfully. Something worth thinking about if you want what you're contributing to be taken seriously.

Well done, it put paid to their whole angle that only the “leftist media” was against the idea of slut shaming and victim blaming, and considering rape to be more than “mischief”.
Ditto.

FWIW, Giovanni and others mightn't be aware of the successes of the "Sack Alan Jones" movement that formed after he commented that Julia Gillard's recently deceased father died of shame. It's here for those interested https://www.facebook.com/SackAlanJones

their “decisiveness”, their “strength”, their “determination”, etc, etc
I do like those qualities. Hell, they're strongly evident in my household of three women, one man. How about 'empathy', 'intelligence' and 'open mindedness' for additions. Judith Collins displayed none of them in the House today or yesterday...

And we know – because history is good at telling us some things – that what it is people look for in political candidates is deeply gendered in nature, irrespective of how hard they try to correct for it.
Are our political expectations heavily differentiated by gender? Intuitively, I'm inclined to agree, but are you saying there's historical evidence for it?
we go for generalised approximations – just like the baseball scouts did in the pre-Money Ball era. So, we do the political equivalent of looking at a baseball player’s “athleticism”, their “temperament”, whether they have an “easy swing”
I'm curious then to know what the political proxies in fact are. Certainly, Labour has had trouble when recruiting from outside the membership and 'de-listing' seems a long way off.

Great thread/discussion. I'm a Labour member like others here, but far from active as I don't live in NZ. I noted the development and the commentary but wanted to learn more, which I most certainly have here. Thanks all. It seems the issue is not the merits of the approach, which I also support, but how to implement it. I do think a close scrutiny of the performance of the current caucus is entirely reasonable. I'm certainly more enthusiastic about some than others.
FWIW, I also think Labour needs to weight 'experience' a little more highly.

It's worrying I agree. Living in Sydney, or anywhere in Australia for that matter, there's a level of acceptance of police corruption that I'd never experienced in NZ. It would be enormously troubling if the integrity of the Police was being compromised by undue political influence.

I got a bit emotional when he played this
So, I'm kinda a marginal player in a uke band in Sydney... and we play "Stranded" in our Punk set... 'jussay'n...

Might be but his reaction seems predictable and I don't think the PM has much to gain from being involved in this matter even for laughs.

It’s going to take 4 weeks. This issue will be well in bed by then
This timeframe, one that seems a little long to me, ensures it won't be sadly.
