Re the Karori Alington connection, I am puzzled about the naming of Alington Road which starts by Karori West school and goes up the hill. The road to Makara goes off it. This area was developed from the 1930s. My parents bought a 1930s house in Hathaway Avenue, off Alington Road, in 1940. So there might have been an Alington family landholding connection there earlier in the century. There is a good recent history of Karori which might have some information (but I don't have a copy). I know it mentions the first Wellington asylum, on the site of Karori Normal school, which I mention in my Access post.

Here is his Wikipedia page. One of the PA readers must know him, or one of his children. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Alington_(architect)

I just realised that Bill Alington who Nicky McCreanor mentioned above (hello Nicky), and I know of as a significant modernist architect in Wellington, and as the husband of the late Margaret Alington historian, is actually William Hildebrand Alington b 1929 in the Turnbull records. So, David, you need to ask him about adding the records you have. He should be easy enough to find.

The book is available for $10 from the museum. It's a great read.

Ditto. I went to a fascinating talk about Alexander W Bickerton yesterday. He was one of the first professors at Canterbury university (later fired), and a slightly scandalous citizen of Christchurch, founder of a commune, prolific writer to the newspaper, and developer of pleasure gardens in Wainoni, which some the subjects of this thread likely visited.
However, the speaker was lamenting that he could find out very little about his two (consecutive) wives, Phoebe and Mary. This post shows the power of crowd sourcing genealogical mysteries.

My son's paternal family has links to McCreanors. I'll ask the family historian if he knows of this husband Frederick.
It would be great to have some photos.
By the way, David, genealogical research can get addictive.

Margaret Alington nee Broadhead was a very well known historian and Turnbull Library regular in Wellington until her death in 2012. Even has a Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Alington There is an Alington Road in Karori by Karori West school. What a pity she is no longer with us as she probably knew all about this story.

I like this easy default meal which doesn't require cooking, although having some products on hand helps. In a bowl put some coleslaw (ready made by Vitalvegetables is nice), light cottage cheese, chopped up hard boiled egg and top with toasted seeds, such as these you can order online from Munchy Seeds. Thin slices of crispy fried tempeh from the company which pays a living wage to the workers is nice with it.

By the way, yay for the DPB.

I fear this was a common story of the era. Those with money could buy and sell unwanted children. Other chidlren just ended up in orphanages or with so-called 'baby farmers' (although maligned by history this occupation did provide a social service or sorts). Disabled children fared the worst. Good people like Mother Suzanne Aubert took them all in regardless at her Home of Compassion, which she founded around this time..
I hope your story reveals some more information.
