I had a schoolteacher once who went to the opposite extreme. I can't remember the word, but she used to deliberately mangle it so it sounded different enought.
my dad would vehemently insist that tyranosaurus was pronounced tyro-nossorus.
I never figured out if he was kidding or not.

My question is, does another (older?) generation separate them more than that? Are they supposed to be three different sounds?
Probably, I remember we were taught in Old & Middle English classes to pronounce every syllable & vowel, so that Fare & Fair would sound quite different.
Of course, I wondered at the time how anyone today knows exactly how those written words were pronounced between 1000 & 1500 years ago.

The number of jurors saying "guilty" dwindled basically due to the relentless pressure of a couple of fast-talkers, and the increasing desire to go home & forget the whole thing. Four of them contacted my friend after the trial and thanked her for holding out.
In my experience, there's always at least one total moron on any jury, who have no idea what the word "evidence" means, and obfuscate the issue with "what if" questions.
Eg: What if he did this while under the influence of P?
What if men from Mars landed & did this & not the accused?
Etc.

I'm 48, I recall my std 2 teacher 40 years ago assuring me that mare & mayor were homophones. Only I with my weird foreign accent disagreed.
BTW, you'll all be familiar with the unofficial kiwi anthem, Near Whizzy Air?

I'd rather export boomers and wrinklies, myself.
I'd volunteer if I thought Angelina Jolie might adopt me.

Did you mean "effect" -- or is there something you're not telling us?
I meant "effect". Bugger

but I'm not as horrified as some people by the possibility of a change of government.
I agree, but over the break I was paid a social visit by a friend who works for a cabinet minister. Somewhere along the way I noted that we'd survived many National governments in the past & that Key was highly unlikely to affect the fall of Western Civilisation.
I was astonished (but hid it, for fear of offending) when the previously very sensible woman, who I have known for 30 or so years, let fly with a diatribe that would make the worst wingnut proud.

As opposed to, say, those who write blog posts lecturing entertainers on their behavior (despite not being familiar enough with the artist to even, say, spell their name) and post pictures of themselves looking like this on the internet?
Not even some acknowledgement of The Wig's useful advice on dating?

Wags finger in outraged manner.

Although Whaleoil's gallery of Helen Clark pictures is so copious as to suggest there's something sexual going on in his head.
OK, this is getting way OTT now.
