As a veteran of internet meetups for years, I reckon name tags are a good idea. They break the ice, they make introductions easier, they let you find and be found. Yes, they're dorky. On the other hand, you're doing a dorky thing anyway: own your dorkiness* and make it work, I say.
Ben: I'm almost prepared to drive to Auckland to meet you now, on the strength of that comment.
*this computer's spelling checker has "dorky" but not "dorkiness." Heh.

The fear of crime can, taken overall, have a more debilitating effect on quality of life than overall than crime itself, and affect more people, create more adverse effects.
I agree. Too many people in our community suffer needlessly from the fear of crime, just because of the actions of a callous few who place their own selfish needs above those of the community.
That's why I'm asking you to donate generously to my new charity, whose aim is to counsel victims of irresponsible reporting in the New Zealand Herald: the Sensible Sentences Trust.

I wonder how many other large organisations are about to have an urgent internal review.

My understanding is that they're NOT monitoring them all them time -- hardly at all, in fact. And they don't have much of a deterrent effect either. They have been useful in prosecutions later though.

Yeah, DPS won't certify you or let you use their system if you store card numbers. I guess it would be possible to modify your system to do so after they audited it, but my goodness, that would incur all sorts of liabilities I would think. What Glen said.

Apropos Gage and co: I just had a rather distressing exchange with a colleague which prompted me to dig up this link, which may be of interest to people who find Gage and co persuasive.
It didn't take me long either. It puzzles me why people who are justifiably skeptical of official accounts won't apply the same skepticism consistently.

isn't that a total betrayal of the promise of the Internet's universality and same-ness?
But I thought it was a promise of particularity and diversity! Bloody internet, promising everything to everyone...

But you did oblige me to personally defend myself.
Ooh, as long as we're marching to bring back belting the kids... let's bring back duelling!
Sir, you have obliged me to demand satisfaction.
(like Steve Barnes, I just want to bring threads together).

I'd agree, except that the issue isn't that Gage et al are controversial. Lots of things are controversial. The issue is lending the imprimatur of the institution to pseudo-scholarship.

Jack, if you have to disguise what you're doing, then you can't get mega-publicity for it, so mission accomplished, I would say. But also, if tip-offs are involved, then good. Fine. You just have a policy that says "we reserve the right to cancel events that promote misinformation contrary to our mission as an institution of higher wotsit", and then you can cancel when tipped off. The bridge club 40th anniversary do will probably still make a booking without fear.
