Own your own history!!
While there’s a feeding frenzy on all things Flying Nun, I thought I might throw this bag of ‘Nun-to-easy-to-find chips’ into the culture carriage of life, just as the doors close – Go gulls! Go!!

In Love With These Times
Here’s a wee round up of a few other reviewers who managed to see past themselves regarding Roger’s memoir…

Not being able to sign in to comment on Spin off (can't remember passwords for various options) I'll post this here:
"There’s also the quite bizarre admission that he spent an entire weekend drinking backstage at the Sweetwaters festival without seeing any of the bands, without any explanation"
Actually Gary there is a fine explanation given - you must have just skim read the book with your blinkers on tightly...

Hopefully now that Simon Grigg has control of the Rip It Up archive someday all these tales will be in a searchable database much like the wonderful Papers Past
Then we can all really have some fun...

The one of a Maidment gig...?
I think it was at The Terminus, in Wellington (and for The Dominion maybe)...
http://www.audioculture.co.nz/scenes/wellington-alternative-music-venues-1978-82
I know it was crowded - a big part of Mr Steel's gripe as I recall, there may have even been a toothache involved... heck it might've even been the gig that John Dix had his car stolen from outside of (with all the Stranded in Paradise photos and notes in) - my recollection of the period is imprecise...
Though I'm pretty sure that Gary was happy to take Flying Nun ads for his In Touch magazine - Mr Double might recall better than me (morning Ken!) as my copies are buried in a banana box deep in the Silverfish Ranch (aka a lock up on the swampy outskirts of Chchch)...
The past eh?
You're damned if ya go there and damned if ya don't...
Perhaps best to leave bygones be 'by gums' or somesuch. -
WTF - why would Gary Steel expect a book about Roger's recollections of Flying Nun to be about stuff that wasn't?
Still he got to mention wellington's jewel in the crown, Jayrem - surprised the Wellington (Four Stars) compilation record (Sausage Records) never got a (deserved) plug, or did it, my eyes had glazed over at the unrelenting snark before the grudging finish - what a way to view the world...
Reminds me a bit of his Toy Love non-review back in 'the day', which was largely about what a bad night he was having - too much Charles Shaar Murray as an impressionable yoof, I fear... -
http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/80943322/dozens-of-illegal-uber-drivers-caught-in-nzta-stings
Scores of Uber drivers have been caught driving illegally in stings targeting the global ride-sharing giant.
In Christchurch alone, the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has caught around 60 illegal drivers over the past several weekends.
It was like "shooting fish in a barrel," one Uber driver said, due to the number of non-compliant drivers in the city.
It reflects escalating tensions between Uber and the NZTA, which has warned the company many of its drivers were likely breaking the law. -
further to the Bennett revelations (from Stuff ) :
In a statement later on Tuesday afternoon, Bennett said she had asked her staff about the allegations, with a staff member confirming they had "briefly" discussed the investigation with a member of the media.
"The staff member in question assumed the information was in the public arena. The question I'd like answered is: was this staff member part of the conversation in which Dennis told Bennett about the investigation, or did Bennett pass this on to them after the fact - aka gossip!??
-
The culture of Dirty Politics continues…
Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett says her staff member did tell a journalist about a police investigation into the chairman of a marae that has been helping the homeless.
Opposition parties have said doing so is an example of dirty politics and a sacking offence – but Mrs Bennett says the staff member assumed the information was in the public arena.http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11656361
Petty point scoring is still the operating system it appears…
Bennett really is a piece of work,
trying to out-Collins Collins ?edit: here is Stuff's take:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/81062253/paula-bennetts-office-accused-of-smearing-chairman-of-auckland-marae-helping-homeless
this quote is a classic:"I just don't know anything about it, and I've got to be really careful, because they're allegations about allegations and I wouldn't want to make any sort of comment."
