When I turned 16, my mother said to me: Stephen, it doesn't matter how old you get, you'll always be my little boy. Naturally, as a 16 year old boy, I cringed (inwardly, anyway).
Now I wish I could tell her I understand exactly what she meant.

Goddamnit, now I'm imagining Andrew Lloyd Webber's Frodo!
(The exclamation mark is part of the name of the work, not an expression of horror on my part, although the thought does horrify me.)

Come on. On the ranked list of books that have obssessive fans, LOTR would be number three after the Koran and the Bible. As it was, many people howled at how the script deviated from the book. If things hadn't looked more or less as the book described them, can you imagine the howls of outrage? Peter Jackson would have had to go into hiding.

That's fantastic, Rob -- many thanks.
Now, don't you think that if Pterry shaved, he would look a lot like the drawings of Leonard of Quirm?

I would tell the hilarious story about my mis-pronunciation of "Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite," but you would all think me a pretentious git, if you do not think so already.
Did he happen to cut links with anyone?
(Apologies for the in-joke if Megan has not regaled you with the details of an incident).

I would just like to say that "salacious" is a sadly under-used word and I'm glad to see it get an airing in an appropriate context. Splendid.

Ah, the tousled look.
Incidentally, does anyone know how to actually pronounce "tousled?" It's one of those ones I only ever see written down but never hear.
On another note, I think describing David as a "satirist" is really missing the mark. Just because his loopy genius has fastened on people we recognise doesn't mean they are being satirised.
I think David's that rare thing, a humorist
who is actually funny. -
Is anyone's long hair pulled back in a severe bun? I ask purely for research purposes.

Despite your stinky jandalled feet?
You deserve an occasional treat? -
Unless things have changed a lot in the last 25 years, what Paul describes is my experience. The teasing/bullying angle was more out of a desire to personalise harrassment rather than any real antisemitism, but "jew" as a verb for cadging etc was just commonplace place slang until I made my displeasure clear. (Hamilton, 1975-86)
There was the workmate who made some passing reference to money and Jews and when I went "what?!" he said, well everyone knows Jews have deep pockets and long noses, and continued in that vein while my jaw dropped further and further -- I was honestly too shocked to get really angry. It happens.
