not bad. you are certainly better than the rest of the left but you still dont quite get it. I earn $500,000. I agree with my employer that I will take a 20% pay cut and we will put the $100,000 into kiwisaver tax free at some split between employer and employee contribution that I cannot be bothered working out. It does not cost my employer an extra penny but I save the 40% marginal tax on excess income that I would save anyway.
all other things being equal other taxpayers will be forced to make up that $40,000 difference. No wait... It wont come from other high earners because they will be doing exactly the same thing.
I will leave you to guess where it comes from.
Now with the National tax cuts that benefit would have topped out. But this is Cullens ignorant economics. So he proposes to soak the poorly paid and provide an unlimited subsidy for himself, his wife and all his highly paid colleagues.

addressing 2 of your points. Mad ave was a pit. I made some money from its demise so maybe I have a bias. It was very run down state housing surrounded by good middle class housing. But it makes economic sense to sell highly desirable chunks of land to developers for high end housing and to use that money to infill and provide more affordable housing. The govt made money by selling mad ave to a developer, buyers made money building nice houses on the sections and the government could spend the mad ave funds on providing infill housing in GI for a vastly larger number of people than lived in mad ave. Having a single state house on a section worth $1m+ is simply economic nonsense. why invest $1m+ on providing a state house for 1 family when that money can be better used by the same state agency to provide multiple houses for multiple families in an area with cheaper land values.
For John Key to oppose putting state houses on prime coastal hobsonville land is simply being economically rationalist. there is no conflict there. It sounds like McGechan close might benefit from the same treatment as Mad ave. suck on that tze
What I am finding mildly bemusing and amusing is the number of labour supporters finding all sorts of reasons to declare there is no underclass. Its there. It is the people who find it easier to nick your stuff than to buy their own. As far as New Zealand is concerned all poverty is relative. Which is why the official poverty measure is such a crock of shit.
The idea of using business & community is to engage with people using sport and jobs with the state as an enabler. Rather than simply paying people money to sit at home and drink, smoke and watch tv and waste their lives. The difference between John Key and Closing the gaps is the fact race is left out of it. closing the gaps was a racist policy.

David - to your attempted rebuttal - My comment above is why John Key will be successful. If something is working he will run with it. but if he becomes convinced that something apparently working in the short term is strategically flawed
I would suggest that John Key's perceptive ability to understand the motivations and opinions of others has been tempered in a very competitive market. Meaning that his objective is to grow the wealth of all New Zealanders rather than that of his own and his mates. What drives him is the knowledge that if it were not for the NZ Welfare state he might not be where he is today.
But he is part of National because he believes in individual responsibility and the market rather than state responsibility and control.
That puts him in a very interesting position vis a vis the BRT and some of National's historically bigger funders.

Dr Brash would have made a brilliant, truly liberal Prime Minister. He had different ideas from the socialists about how best to achieve economic growth. But it is clear that New Zealand has missed an opportunity to get back on the right track.
Even in his resignation speech he was defending the right of Hager to publish. Can any of you in your wildest dreams imagine Clark saying the same. Thought not.
Dr Brash is a man of honour. I only hope that John Key can measure up and the people of New Zealand will not believe the lies that labour will inevitably spin about him.
