Emma:
You must have been busy or something saturday morning because I distinctly remember Sideshow Bob waxing lyrical on TV1 or TV3 about the fact that the Arts Centre glass was still there in one piece...so to speak. Ooh Ahh. He was beside himself with joy.

NZ's number one insect erotica author
Not forgetting the otter erotica, too.
Automatically I pictured "auto" in front of "erotica" rather than "otter".
Expecting a story about that?.....don"t hold your breath! ;-)
David:Would be inteersted to know a bit of the soil mechanics that went on aoround the area. Liquifaction? Subsidence? Horizontal movement? uplifting?
Geeky request. You know the sort.
Now for Engineers re Chimneys: Thought. What if a steel frame that went around the top of the chimney and secured the perimeter of the rim was held on by a couple of rods that went down inside the chimney and secured into the base of the fireplace. Add a bit of tension and it should then hold together. Classic "prestressd concrete" suggestion. Assumes a clean drop through the chimney.

Your fixing skills must have come from somewhere where you probably had to improvise.....something like lack of money in reseach organisations maybe.
David's Ditty: "Oh, I'm glad I'm an engineer"
Second thought: Damn, that someone misused evacuated. Oh well, can't have everything
It reminds me of the quote from a few years back while (I think) a council meeting in North Shore was in session.
Earthquake: Shake shake shake shake........
Chairman: "Shall we evacuate?"
Counciil CEO: "What? Buildings or bowels?"At times like this muffins, scones and pikelets remind one that civilisation has crept on a bit.
Yeah. Couldn't sleep......thinking....what if...

Its OK. Gerry said that 80% of Chch is OK. It is only 20% that has a few problems.
Hmmm. After watching JC tonight down by the Avon.....No wonder we haven't heard from the Rocket Man.
Its not so much "Up Front".
It's what "Out Back" we ain't seeing.
Keep holding those hands kiddo.

In support of MellowPuffy:
Years ago Televusion Noo Zild used to decide what was "good" for us by monitoring the letters from "Mother of Four", Whangarei.
What's the problem with Mellow's Mum being a substitute eh?

Ross, you're just not reading the Libertarianz right. You have to read them as comedy. They're gold.
It's all good now. I've had a wee dram.....happy again.....I'm home...
Right. Back to reality.
Interesting chat to my folks this evening. Quite happy with Mayor Bob and his handling of the situation thus far, they are...
I think a lot of kudos has to go to National CD. And I think it goes back a few years to when John Norton got stuck in and told local bodies that the Beehive cannot do their work in a disaster. He had a battle and he got a bit of shit when the Wanganui/Manawatu floods hit and there was a lot of soul searching in the aftermath including people not knowing what the hell was going on out there. The local bodies had not got there arse into gear but after that things started getting sorted out. Then came the Tsunami(s) and that too got it sorted a bit more. Practice WAS making perfect?
Once the quake hit it seems - from here anyway - that the local bodies - at least around Chch - have finally got their shit together and it appears - again from here - that it IS being sorted.
It IS good to see that we can do things together with the Govt assisting - again viewed from here - seemingly talking as one with the locals. (I hold my breath 'cos Gerry is there but.)
I feel almost confident if a bigger one hits. But I don't really want to be around the Wgtn CBD.

And right off the Libertarians Home page
That individuals should be left free to make their own choices in life, but should be held responsible for the consequences of their actions .
That people are essentially benevolent, and that charity is a virtue.
That the government is there to protect people against aggressive force but should otherwise be inconspicuous
Gosh. Who chose you to be born?
Who set off the Earthquake? Noddy?
If an "aggressive Force" ain't a freaking earthquake, what the F*&K is?
be·nev·o·lent –adjective
1. characterized by or expressing goodwill or kindly feelings: a benevolent attitude; her benevolent smile.
2. desiring to help others; charitable: gifts from several benevolent alumni.
3. intended for benefits rather than profit: a benevolent institution.Yeah rIght.
He doesn't even know what he said.
What an arsehole.
Sorry for that PASers. Not like me at all......
