  • Field Theory: How's that working out for…, in reply to Megan Wegan,

OK, but what about compression vests/pants for sprinters or swimmers?
Perhaps we should make everyone compete naked…?
Didn't FINA tighten up the rules around those, though?

What, those pants weren't tight enough already?

  • Field Theory: How's that working out for…, in reply to Rich Lock,

To me, yachting isn't a sport - and I mean this at America's Cup level - simply because the thing that seems to define it is how much money you spend on your boat. And the skill required to sail said boat is secondary.

I went off it in a big way when that great ocean-going nation of Switzerland got involved.

To summarise the arguments here so far: rugby is a great game but some like it more than others, and the RWC has entailed considerable investment, which may or may not pay off. And some wanky ad men have made some stupid mistakes (starting with that beastly American army bully on the Sky TVCs)

Or anyone else on PA, for that matter. We have tkts for ABs vs Japan.

@ Kate Hannah. If you are coming to the Wales vs Samoa at the Waikato Stadium and need a place to stay, we would be happy to provide (gratis, of course)

  • Hard News: Is that it?, in reply to John Armstrong,

I've been meaning to wander down the corridor one of these days to say hello but have yet to muster up the courage. It's bad enough disagreeing with Gio

Gio is a pussy-cat. Do come by as I still pass colleagues in the halls and still don't know who they are---and I have been at this uni for quite some time. We could compare notes on shitty jobs we have had, and the good ones.

  • Hard News: Is that it?, in reply to John Armstrong,

PS, no, not the one from the Herald.

He has a really shitty job?

Greetings from a fellow Hamiltonian. That makes 4 of us, according to my count.

Is there such a thing as snow envy? ...But then I remember those long, cold winters when I was studying in Ohio. One memorable week when icicles formed inside our little house, the person-who-is-now-my-wife came to visit and stepped outside with post-shower wet hair (which then froze solid), slipping on ice and cracking my elbow, and biking to the local supermarket through snow drifts.

other new zealand people. please don't put in woodburners. i don't want the price of fuel to go up too much.

I reckon it has more to do with those selfish people with those damn heat pumps, sucking all the good air from outside and making it colder for the rest of us! ;-)

Did you go to the Billy T premiere, Geoff?

Didn't get an invite so I went to a meal and a Film Soc screening of Costa Botes Candyman, with Costa in attendance. A natty little film!
The premiere was at the new Hoyts all-singing, all-dancing, all-digital cinema at The Base at Te Rapa--and I avoid The Base for it has been the ruination of Hamilton's CBD.

How about setting up a donation thing for Haywood's power bill? I'm in for $20

I would double that! Other than a cold wind, all this seems to have passed by the Waikato. Mt. Pirongia (959m), viewed from mny 4th floor office at the uni, is bathed in sunshine, without a hint of snow. But I am grateful for the wood mix of blue gum/macrocarpa/manuka/paulonia stoking the home fires.
