I'm reading the shock doctrine ATM, but I haven't got up to the post-9/11 parts. The early stuff is good, however, and makes a strong case that neo-liberal "reform (as we had here during the Revolution) is primarily aimed at redistributing wealth upwards and allowing multinationals to pillage entire countries.
Like Zippy, though, I don't think its a conspiracy as such - rather a lot of rich and powerful people with a self-justifying ideology engaged in rank opportunism to fatten their own wallets and those of their class.

I think our seniors deserve a better champion than that pompous lazy fool.
Indeed they do - but he's the one they voted for, so we have to put up with him. Just like we have to put up with Bob the Builder.

You're right. We should have asked her about torture, and whether she had any fear of ending up in the Hague like Karazdic.
Which is a roundabout way of saying "never respect a politician. if you do, they'll get away with murder (or in this case, torture and war crimes)".
Seriously, the exaggeratd respect the US media shows for their representatives undermines any pretence of public accountability. We're better off with a rude, obnoxious press pack (though please, can we have one which is less superficial ?)

Is there anyone on here who, in a strange and small way, will actually miss Winston once he’s gone in a few months time?
I think you're assuming too much - the man has the survivability of a cockroach. if someone dropped a nuke on Wellington and turned the centre of kiwi cafe culture into glass, it'd be Winston and the cockroaches playing in the rubble. And then the cockroaches would die because they need warm homes and human skin flakes.
OTOH, how long Winston would last without constant feeding from the media is an interesting question. Maybe he'd starve to death, maybe he'd just shrivel up and shrink like a time lord in a bad series finale. And almost certainly you'd never get the experiment past the ethics committee...

In related news. Don't you think it was disrespectful and rude to ask about the Peters issue when Condoleezza Rice was in town?
You're right. We should have asked her about torture, and whether she had any fear of ending up in the Hague like Karazdic.

If the MFC is a space station, then the Oaks Complex just down the road is a semi-abandoned biodome.
Well, it certainly feels like one...

So, just how many people could I persuade to pop into the Manners St Arty Bees Books and 'say hi to Matt for me', should I seriously want to make his life more 'interesting'?
Sadist.

TVNZ's Olympics site launched this week (the designers look to have made the very most of the constraints imposed by the ageing site templates) and will stream four channels of video coverage during the games.
Well, that's great for people who want to watch a sporting event hosted by one of the world's worst human rights abusers. Personally, though, I'm not going near it with a barge pole.

Well there was no authorisation statement on the biography under the EFA ...
They didn't need one - the Herald is after all a newspaper.
But yes, Key can't reprise Brash and have a made-for-election biography published without it being considered an election advertisement. Nice of his mates at APN (the same mates he had heavy a journalistat the Northern Advocate for daring to actually quote him verbatim) to help out.
