What do you mean, Colin Firth or Hugh Grant?

now I've got another question: when to let them near my comics?
Ditto what Giovanni said. If you're not planning on eBaying the comics, let them at 'em as soon as they can read or look like they want to read.
My older boy pretty much taught himself to read using Footrot Flats. And then discovered the ancient comic stash of a friend's dad (whose English aunty used to mail them to Connecticut every week of his childhood). Buster and Valiant -- excellent stuff, full of bellowing sergeants-major, toffs, speccy swots, spivs, flogging teachers, and all sorts of other cultural elements I hadn't expected to have to explain for years. And could barely explain.
Lately it's all Asterix, Tintin, and Calvin & Hobbes. And we hear good things about Bone.
I'm still wondering what happened to my own childhood box of Bunty, Tammy & June, Misty, my brother's Whizzer & Chips... and whether they really were all written in a castle, as the mailing address used to suggest (what was it, King's Tower or something? Probably some ghastly concrete block, but it sounded wildly romantic).

I would gladly tend such a house :-)

Bill Ralston will be obliged to write his columns in the presence of a witness who will ensure that he spends at least fifteen uninterrupted minutes at the task.
But will he still get a dollar a word? Or should we get Obama to cap his pay like the bankers?

His house just came back on the market. I don't know if that's a coincidence or not.
Ooh, link?

Vintage Morris Minor with retro-fitted airbags and seatbelts. Great for picking up chicks (or lads), and good luck getting anything above 50 kph.
Helen, I hear you on the 3 year old "performance review." Notice I carefully failed to mention a) the toilet train, which has not left the station, and b) the sibling prevention campaign, aka the family bed... eh, we renewed his contract anyway.

Don't believe the hype, Russell. Mc^2 is just a regular Big Mac, dried, pulverized, and pressed into pill form. Hence the name. Stick with the good stuff. (Besides, by the time any residual mad cow disease kicks in, the party's long over).
Deepthinker (Papatoetoe)
I for one applaud the original equation. Equals means the same as. No special privileges for E or mc. We're all Kiwis, after all. If we're going to let foreigners in, surely this Mr Einstein is at least as deserving of a New Zealand passport as that Zaoui fellow?

Granted, there are fewer misogynist blowjob scenes in the book reviews and essays. Which is why I preferred them.

Rob - if you liked James Woods (as did I, although the man can't see the forest for the trees), you might like Colson Whitehead's parody of him even more.
And a moment of silence for John Updike, who died today. Good god, the man could write (I was a fan of his reviews and essays and short stories more than the novels but there's no shortage of any of these). It's hard to believe that ceaseless stream of golden prose has, well, ceased. It's like hearing that Old Faithful has stopped erupting.

Just wanted to pop in and applaud Greg all the way back on page 1 for turning a crap afternoon into a slightly less crap one for a few people. That's so nice!
stopping to ask three separate similar baby-carrying cars if I could help, by picking up something from the dairy or anything.
If I'm ever trapped in traffic with a screaming baby, or (conveniently) pass someone trapped in traffic with a screaming baby, I hope I'd be as lucky or as kind. Interesting, the extremes of behaviour noted in Greg's account (the speeding nutter) and Russell's (the white van!), vs small acts of kindness.
I find myself wondering what happened to that old bloke Russell saw. It's a horrible feeling when you see something you could possibly help with, but are unable to stop, or don't have your cellphone or a working knowledge of first aid.
I'm also wondering how the police so succesfully diverted traffic that there was only one other car involved, by the end (apart from the truck and the van). Miracle there were no horrible crashes. Or were there?
