the weekly Council email reminds me of this Garden event starting tomorrow:
Don’t miss this week's spectacle at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Over five nights Botanic D'Lights transforms the Gardens with illuminated artworks and innovative light installations.
Come along from 7-9pm from 3rd - 7th August.
The event is designed for families of all ages to enjoy, with plenty of hot drinks and street food available to purchase on site as well lighting merchandise available from three ‘pop up’ shops. Families are advised to dress warmly and bring a torch. Entry to the event is via a gold coin donation, the proceeds of which will go to revitalising the Children’s Garden

I think our Press just ended today, too -
My partner used to get one as part of her job but having taken redundancy some months ago and retiring, the paper kept on coming - someone phoned from The Press a week ago but our portable phone battery died mid conversation, no one phoned back and today August 1st no paper...
So they didn't even give us a chance to transition. Wham! Cold Turkey!
But on reflection I don't think we'll be giving them money for something they don't even care about themselves any more...Ps Rob Stowell email me, I have a photocopy of something for you if you want it

the lottery of lobsters and lotophagi…
I’d said “locust-eaters” instead of “lotus-eaters”.
the shorter ’locus eaters’ would be more apt in the current discussion…
(the plural of course being that famously misspelt Norse trickster – loci!!)They eat locusts in Dunedin now, ya know!

The Australasian/US joint production Cleverman at least got a Screen Production Grant (for Pukeko Pictures and Park Road I assume) and has far more substance than Filthy Rich – which on my brief attempt at watching seemed mired in the ’90s , if not Gloss on P.
Though those Aussies do seem to like parading their appalling penal policies and practices like a badge of honour on the telly…it only seems to be available at TVNZ On Demand at the moment

My (small & homebuilt) PV system as well as my wind turbine have been sitting in the loft of my workshop since the earthquakes. Quite unforgivable, I’m afraid.
Totally forgivable - it's good to have 'lofty aspirations'...

the body electrick…
I’m in inner-city Sydney wondering why my internet connection is so awful today. Ditto the different provider cellphone internet. First world problems… but it does remind me why I want to be grid-agnostic for electricity.
We (the planet) may still be in the tail end of a Geomagnetic Storm…

Uber hired CIA-linked research firm to investigate Seattle union politics
For months, Uber has been fending off fraud allegations related to an investigation into one of its legal opponents, which the company commissioned from a secretive CIA-linked research firm called Ergo. Documents related to the case also refer to other investigations Uber contracted with Ergo for, and so far, the details of those investigations have remained secret.
Now, The Verge has found evidence of a separate Ergo project investigating union politics in Seattle, conducted shortly after a controversial ordinance in December granted the city's drivers the power to bargain collectively. Uber confirmed the project and characterized the effort as research into the city's political landscape, emphasizing that it was not targeted at any individuals or drivers.
