NZ children have shocking dental health in some population groups. Can't access the Ministry site for some strange reason, but this 7-page PDF draws on some of their research late last decade.
And at least (most) children supposedly get funded dental care. Dental health in adults is not measured as far as I'm aware.

These types of things are significant when people are looking for excuses to vote out a government, but I don't get the feeling that people are looking for an excuse to do that right now.
Astute. The people who need this govt removed the most have stopped voting.

There are health issues with high levels of sugar consumption beyond obesity.
Far more interested in diabetes and tooth decay, personally. Nobody *needs* coke.

Yes. Accepting tax as one extreme of a spectrum shows how badly our political discourse has been eroded since 1984. Look at the reaction here when someone dares to suggest firm regulation of a social harm.

James said "end poverty", but apparently that's so hard for us that all we can think of doing is being punitive to poor people.

They are not mutually exclusive. Agree about tackling poverty. This is just one strange case where the health benefits accrue unequally in the different direction than usual.
The one that worries me is upcoming road pricing/congestion charging - if it does not come with some with subsidies for the poor, it will price them off the roads first.
