  • Field Theory: Not Watered Down,

"Alright" he replied, "they could do better".

He could have been referring to the fact that the Braves appear to have shored up their pitching rotation for this season, which is the way they won all those division titles through the 80's and 90's.

Or he could have been intimadated by you and said the most bland, inoffensive thing he could.

Or he could just be a twat in a hat

If 20/20 "kills" anything it'll be mid-week ODIs (in my current opinion).

So how about a tour where you play ODI's in the weekends, purely as day games, and 20/20's during the week? You could play a three match ODU series and a 6 match 20/20 series doing this (or 4 20/20's, whatever).

avoid 4 hours of boring forgone conclusion when one side stuffs up.

Any sport where the result becomes obvious early becomes dull. Look at the rugby world cup - did we really need to see the All Blacks beat Portugal. At the start of the game there was the chance, albeit small, that the game could be interesting. But once the AB's got a couple of tries ahead it was just a snore-fest.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

but it must surely strike you that a lot of people at the casino don't look like they're having fun?

anyone ever been to a sports event when say the All Blacks aren't winning....

Or, indeed, watched an audience during a performance of, say, an Ibsen tragedy? Or during the final episode of The Sopranos? Probably the same thing - deep concentration with the hope of a pay-off at the end. And then all you get is a black screen....

Or ask the Indian supporters at the end of the 20/20 match on Friday night. They had high hopes. They had spent their money on tickets, on buying the gear, on the inflated catering prices in the stadium. And all they leave with is the empty, hollow feeling in the pit of their stomach.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

Some years ago I was doing a breakfast theatre show in Auckland. I was finished by 10am every morning, and was usually wired on coffee by that point. Having no car, and without anything better to do, I started going to the casino for a couple of hours each day. I always played blackjack (at the smallest possible stake). I found that I could get through a couple of hours with minimal losses and occasional gains; enough to be better than other ways I could spend money (on more cups of coffee for example). I met some interesting people along the way and generally had a good time.
I agree that the pokies are disturbing if you watch the people playing them. I used to get a similar feeling when I watched the higher stakes balckjack tables - the people there seemed to react the same if they last $1000 or won $1000.

BTW I once read that Sky City makes $50 for every person that walks through its doors. That's not just the people who play the games, that's everyone. Which means that some people are dropping a lot of money there.

T20 is like the Exponents - normally, you'd sneer at them, but after drinking 14 beers they start to sound good, REALLY good.

and then regret it in the morning.......

Enjoyable when you sing along to the good parts but you might not want the whole album.

With a six being the equivalent of the gear change at the end of Linivg On A Prayer?

  • Field Theory: Cricket isn't Rock,

I'd say that a test match is more like a symphony, with an ODI being The Beatles and 20/20's a Leonard Nimoy/William Shatner Beatles cover.

    But then, I'm a purist

As an employee I have concerns about the floated 4-day week (or the 9 day fortnight).
I haven't done any research but the implication is that, apart from the 20% pay cut as outlined in Keith's post, the same amount of work would be expected to be done in less time. Many people are stuggling with the work/life balance as it is.
The counter would be that you'd have an extra day off. Where I work the job routinely cuts into our evenings and weekends. Its a part of doing what we do. But that still makes it extremely difficult to do anything else. And if you have to work all the time on your four "work" days, then your extra day off becomes a time when you catch up on all of the things that you haven't had a chance to do otherwise.
