Yes. It’s one thing for a PM to decline to talk about security matters (as they have all done), but another to flat-out lie instead. Struck me he’s not very good at it either. Should avoid poker.
This, more than anything else, will keep the story alive. Is he really just a vicarious liar? I doubt it. There will be a reason, and that mystery will arouse the attention of journalists.

A very tantalising broadcast. What seems clear is that John Key's brain fades about when he had met Fletcher prior to the "recommendation from the State Services Commission" and his assertion that the recommendation was an SSC initiative were essentially lies. So why was he motivated to lie?

Thanks for this. It's a timely reminder of an abominable series of events. Clearly everyone concerned would have wished life for the miners, but if Whittall made decisions that contributed to their deaths then he should have been held accountable. In my view dropping charges was a mistake. Some may have felt that financial compensation was worth it (after all a court case isn't going to bring anyone back from the dead), but I think they are mistaken. After such a conviction some compensation would have been demanded from the company.

You have to wonder about her choice of acolyte. If she really has a high regard for Slater then this says some rather disturbing things about her judgement.

Labour lost an opportunity this morning. Wailing about a National jack up just made them look like weak victims being yet again outmaneuvered by those clever Nats. How much better for Cunliffe to have said something like:
"Yes, Shane and I have been discussing this, and while we are sad to farewell a valued colleague, we wish him well and we're glad he's found another way to serve people. Doing things for people is what Labour is all about, and we have a fabulous replacement in Kelvin Davis......"

Russell, I like your questions, and I'd add this one:
"When are the media organisations going to provide statistical literacy training for their commentators?"
The confidence limits were + or - 3.9%, and we have them rabbiting on about shifts in numbers that were often fractions of the standard error, let alone the confidence limits.
