Hard News: #NetHui: it's all about you, in reply to
No no no. Magnate and tycoon imply shitloads of money. Even though my upbringing was privileged for the time, - we had a bach, and a boat (well, several, but they weren't pleasure craft) and a nice house, and we all went to good schools, and university - by today's obscenely monied families standards, we would have been the poor country cousins.

I don't know about that. But TBH Capt of Industry and Tycoon? 2 enormously different propositions. And see how much more privileged I should have been?

Can we talk about privilege, or rather the use of that word as a weapon of sorts? Am I sticking my neck out on this? I had never come across cis privilege etc till fairly recently. I'm a normative woman myself - as in, that's the term I prefer. Less threatening word? I don't know. All I know is that I find that telling people how privileged they are by dint of birth isn't enormously useful - especially if that person, over their life, hasn't been as "privileged" as their birth circumstances may have prescribed. I appreciate that there are many people in the world for whom life is easier than others. I don't think that's anything to apologise for - au contraire, I think it's something to use for the good. Pay it forward. That's all that "privilege" or, as I like to call it, good fortune, is good for.

Did anyone else catch the news item about the Wellington event this weekend where retailers from central chch are getting to sell their wares? Happened to see the lovely woodturner who worked from the Arts Centre for 28 years. His stuff is fantastic - I got my keyring from him. It's a thing of beauty. I hope they all did very well, and what a fantastic idea.

I'm glad, Lilith. I would hardly have called it scary - I thought the dog was behind the chair bumping it. ONCE. So yes, not exactly an epic event.

Completely okay. That's my reaction too.

Every time a child is killed by their caregivers in this country, we think that’s going to happen. And it doesn’t. Kids keep being abused, and killed. Personally, I see no value in this book, and I have no problem with Carole or any other bookseller choosing not to stock it. And I’m really not sure it’s a story any of us need to hear – at least not in this way.

You're going to have to manufacture an excuse to come to Auckland too, you know. I am sure we could rustle up a good time for you. If you come in summer-ish time, I know someone who has a very good deck for parties, too.
