  • Hard News: The March for Democracy,

So you're saying you really think 9/11 was an Israeli plot? I just want to be clear here.

If you don't, what was the point you were making by providing that link? I really don't understand what you are getting at. What is the nature of the discomfort are you expressing by posting that link?

    disingenuous

I do deliberately conflate the Israeli plot angle with "the Jews did it," because I genuinely believe it is an antisemitic explanation. It depends on belief in scheming Jew tropes for its plausibility.

Yes, I know Palestinians are Semites. Antisemitism still means Jew-hating and it's not my fault that the German Jew-hater who coined the phrase botched his etymology. Again, what the fuck? What does that have to do with whether "it's an Israeli plot" is an antisemitic explanation?

Steve, in order for options 2, 3, 4 and 5 to be on a fair footing with 1 and 6, you need to add the equivalently far-fetched provisos, eg " and every US military officer has maintained their silence since" or " and in this instance the insurance companies were happy to pay the claim no questions asked" or "because when you want to start a war in one country the best way is a false flag operation that fingers another", and so on.

I guess the most disappointing part of the "it's all the Jews' fault" explanation is it's so tiresomely unoriginal.

  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

I too just watched that now -- I'm off work today with the dreaded lurgi.

At first I felt Barbosa's damning assembly of clips was a bit mean but by the end of the interview my sympathy had completely evaporated.

Perhaps I am imagining, but it seemed to me that McV*c*r felt bad about his evil take on the Emery case. The way he shied away from answering any question about that directly was telling.

Russell, if McV*c*r shook my hand like that I'd wash it with bleach afterwards.

I think this is the right place to tell you all about Höpöhöpö Böks, which is an Icelandic poem composed using only one vowel, making it a univocal lipogram.

  • Hard News: The Cycling Superhighway,

When I was talking about taking evasive action, I was more thinking about the scenario where pedestrians are wandering on a shared path. I agree, if someone steps directly in front of you, you're both toast.

But we see that with pedestrians and cars too. Here in Welly, pedestrians insist on right of way in the CBD all the time. Mostly they get it, occasionally a car driver will (fatally) remind them that they legally don't...

Perhaps the law of the sea ought to be applied to land; faster moving vehicles give way to slower moving things (pedestrians or cyclists)?

Given that's how I feel about cars vs cyclists, it would be hypocritical to have any other position.

The average punter who just wants to get from A to B without being an athlete is unlikely to be going so fast they can't take evasive action.

  • Hard News: Misadventure and Muppetry,

From the document Sacha linked to:

Growing numbers of people were coming on to SB and IB with a mental illness. The increase is consistent with trends in other developed countries. Comparisons of the prevalence of mental illnesses over time are difficult to make but rates may have been rising. Possible contributors include an increasing prevalence of stressors such as financial hardship and social isolation. New Zealand drug surveys also indicate a significant increase in the use of amphetamine and methamphetamine between 1998 and 2001. This can lead to a range of psychological disorders, including deep depression and symptoms that may be indistinguishable from schizophrenia, as well as physical disorders such as stroke and respiratory problems (EACD 2002).

We observe patterns of growth that are consistent with the likely effects of the current rise in the prevalence of diabetes. The associated growth in obesity may also be contributing to the growth in numbers of people coming on to SB and IB with musculoskeletal conditions.

Some of the growth in IB and SB might be due to the effects on health of long-term unemployment.

Growth in IB inflow rates was more rapid for those aged 30–39 and 40–49 than for those aged 15–19 and 20–29. There is something different about the cohorts that experienced the economic restructuring of the 1980s and early 1990s in their early to middle years compared to those that entered the labour market either during or after the restructuring.

Makes Ian's speculation seem all the more plausible.

Is anyone else as surprised as I am at Doug Graham's loud proclamations of innocence?

"The prospectus was prepared by management, commented on by the auditors and solicitors and then accepted by the Companies Office. The document was sent to the trustee. None of these advised the board of any concerns with the final wording."

Sir Doug also expressed dismay at the time it had taken to make the allegations and said he was "very disappointed" the commission had never raised with him any concerns it had regarding the prospectus before it filed proceedings.

I know we don't have high standards for directors in NZ, but I'm pretty sure there's more to it than just signing what people bring to you and collecting your honorarium.

I can't put my finger on why, but the latest handwringing over beneficiaries reminds me of this.

But perhaps I just want to see Paula Bennett tipped into horse pond.
