  • Hard News: Limping Onwards,

I get that people are defensive about the premise, because my assertion means that they’ve wasted years of their life and quite a lot of money

I get that your schtick on PAS is that you're a voice of reason and common sense against the out-of-touch elitists, or whatever, but this is a stupid thing to say. We're not 'defensive'. We actually think you're wrong.

  • Hard News: Limping Onwards,

Is Danyl suggesting historical research be carried out by amateurs?

I think so. Because it's really not that difficult to, say, spend months or years in archives reading thousands of utterly illegible handwritten manuscripts in order to create a compelling and original narrative from hugely disparate sources, all the while maintaining a working knowledge of the secondary literature in order to make sure you aren't misunderstanding the significance of everything you're looking at.

I know a lot of academic history may fail the readability test - believe me, there's quite a lot of hand-wringing over this issue within the ivory tower - but frankly, I'm surprised *any* of it is readable, considering the amount of information you have to process and analyse. It's fucking hard work.

  • Hard News: Limping Onwards,

If you’re interested in literature or philosophy or history you can just read about those things yourself, without getting the rest of the country to pay to indulge your interests.

Belatedly, but I only just read this thread and I cannot let this stand: I currently work as a historical researcher for a private firm. A job I would be unable to do adequately if the rest of the country hadn't paid 'to indulge my interests', because actually, having a bit of a read of some history books in my spare time does not equate to the rather rigorous training in research I got by doing a postgraduate degree in *history*, that TERRIBLY useless subject which merely *tells humanity how everything in the world happened and what it means*.

  • Radiation: Signing off, moving on,

BIG sadface. I was always excited when there was a new Radiation post. It was my safe 'nattering on about shows that everyone with "taste" scorns me for watching' place!

Watch the 2 year old doing the Grouse Grind and you’ll feel better. Canadians are big on safety and providing for all levels of ability.

I feel like I may have said this before, but: I was teasing you, Dyan.

(See, it's funny to me because you said you missed how outdoorsy Vancouver was, and New Zealand also has this reputation for being REALLY outdoorsy, and so I was imagining a scary place which is EVEN MORE OUTDOORSY, filled with manic trampers wearing Birkenstocks on every limb, who fling you heartily off the door of the plane as soon as you land and force you to start a campfire with your bare hands before you can even get through customs.)

  • Up Front: Where You From?,

I am now utterly terrified to visit Canada, the land which apparently makes New Zealand seem 'not very outdoorsy'.

I'll let Danielle off. I do her this favour, maybe she do me a favour sometime....an offer she can't refuse...

Well, my first child *is* a masculine child...

The Front Lawn – When You Come Back Home

The one that gets me is 'Tomorrow Night', especially in the verse when she comes back from the UK and flies in over Oriental Bay. Sniffle. And I've never even lived in Wellington.

Jacqui, there was a running joke for a while that Gio was incapable of posting without saying something about 'Italy, where I am originally from'. It might have faded from view before you joined us though.

It may be something to do with always having had the option of living somewhere else, but I fucking love this place and I am a big sloppy dork about it. That is all.

    Catriona McLeod

My mother is slightly obsessed with how she pronounces 'strengthening' during the weather report. 'Where is the g? She's saying STRENTHening! I can't bear it!'
