Good read, thanks!
Burgers are big in Melbourne too - the Merrywell at Merrywell on Southbank is well worth a visit if burgers are one's thing

I second, third, fourth and more the thoughts on Audioculture & Simon’s efforts in driving the site, and particularly the securing of public funding. It really is a tremendous resource, and its uniqueness well illustrated by absence of a similar initiative in Australia (aside from Milesago, which has some content but is nowhere as rich, not as pervasive (for want of a better word) and somewhat self-evidently runs on a shoestring and love http://www.milesago.com/ )
And I still chuckle at the thought of Taste records having an outlet in Parnell, near where the tennis shop used to be, something I’m only aware of (despite having grown up there) via Simon’s stories. One of my Blerta LP’s has a Taste sticker inside the sleeve, and I’ve been advised it was probably sold via the more liberal Lorne st shop of olde …
Found the Collision LP at a record fair in Essendon, Melbourne about three years ago … happened to come across a second copy at the same fair (for a measly $18) but like a right plonker I left it behind. Haven’t seen another one since ..
The speaker comment reminds me that NZ company Perreaux used to be in the speaker game - theres a really impressive image of, I think, Ticket in the 70's with some and they were jaw dropping .. will see if I can find it
On the music tip, I enjoyed this clip of Mark De Clive Lowe posted by Cut Chemist, doing the ethiocali thing:

If there were prizes for outstanding drum work on a NZ record, Headband's "The laws must change "would surely be on the podium. No clip on youtube unfortunately, but in light of JK's comments about drug laws and policing earlier this week, it seems particularly apt.
Sadly we lost vibes master Bobby Hutcherson this week - heres part one of Gilles Peterson's tribute mix (there is a part two as well):

And its been 25 years since Cypress Hills self tiltled album came out. I can remember sitting in 7th form English class playing 'I wannna get high" (off cassette), and funnily enough, also remember the concert at the North Shore Events Center (yes, a very odd venue choice) in 1994, which featured Ice Cube and clouds of pungent smoke. Theres an XL T shirt from that one still in the cupboard, noting I mainly wear mediums these days. Enjoy. -

Looks a bit like 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the cover image for that mix, the home of Kool Herc at the time this stuff kicked off if I recall right. When I was in NYC 4 years ago I did a slightly gimmicky tour which went past there, hosted by Mr Kurtis Blow. And excuse my pedanticism Russell, but doubles were more for extending the breakbeat than the mix & as recent as 10 years ago the only option for DJ’s coming downunder was to bring at least two flight cases rammed with wax. If you’ve ever tried to extend the breakbeat on something like scoprio or apache or I get lifted, its much harder in practice than you might expect!
On the history tip, Dan Charnas’ book might be of interest.

Bit of a goose move to bad mouth your opposition, but somewhat predictably that’s the Aussie way (i.e. look at the cricket team) and as such I’ve no sympathy for the young man. Organising committees have been fretting athletes getting themselves into trouble on social media for months, but as this incident shows the plain old microphone, a big mouth and some poorly considered comments which you should worry about !

After reading the Dal post by Moana I was thinking some more about how Australia – Sydney and Kings Cross in particular – was almost a rite of passage for many Kiwi groups in the 70’s (not to mention that oz rockers like Billy Thorpe also got their major start in the Cross).
The other notable thing in the comments on Moana’s piece were all the references to Renee Geyer as the source for songs back then ,,, some of her songs, like ‘Be there in the morning’ are ‘celebrated’ but not sure it extends to much of the catalogue.
Pretty sure Blerta had Renee do vocals for their first album – This is the life – recorded in Sydney, after which there was a label disagreement or something. I’ve got two copies, and on the back of one a bunch of names/credits are blacked out. Details seem scant, but I do wonder if the OG tapes with Renee are still kicking about somewhere
