Oh Please Let it all go Obama's Way!
-
Just listened to the tape on TV3 - I'd say it's nothing.
No Neutron bomb here mate. -
Tizard, my local MP and someone very pleasant to have a chat and a drink with, has been missing in action in the electorate. I think that's why she is under such danger of losing it.
I was told that she drove down Ponsonby Rd on Saturday "waving like the Queen" from her car. She comes across as too "born to rule" these days. I haven't met anyone who says they're voting for her.
It's always hard for electorate MPs to balance their local duties with their Wellington ones, but she seems to have been particularly poor at it this last term.
And her campaign has been a joke.

In the US the Roman Catholic hierarchy has been slamming Obama and telling believers to support McCain, largely due to their respective stands on abortion. I note that none of our mainstream religious leaders here seem to try that line.

Hmmm, well, I'm not convinced.
One of the reasons we went away from FPP was that it was widely perceived as scandalous & unethical that Labour could gain more votes than national and still not gain the seats to govern.
The idea that any party that reaches over 50% of the vote can be kept out by a group of small parties is one I have real ethical difficulty with.
-
If any party ends up with over 50% of the vote but can't form the govt due to the overhang I am going to be extremely pissed off.

I'll miss RG if they go from that spot on Queen St, but... I haven't bought anything there for .... ages....
I just liked knowing they were there still. But it's a sign of the times I guess.
And the Greens remind me more of Sally Oldfield - anyone else remember "Mandala"?

Beautiful & evocative writing, thank you .
And wonderful to water the roots of family in this way. I grew up here in NZ with a fairly old spread out NZ pakeha family on both sides, and with a very strong sense of having family here and in Australia and the UK: It seemed there were always cousins, 2nd cousins, 3rd cousins, or great aunts or uncles (even great great aunts! They seemed so ancient!) arriving or going from our home, or we were going to meet them somewhere else. I can't imagine what it is like to be cut off from that knowledge and sense of connection back through the generations. It's great you are cultivating it in your son.

I get the impression that the Nats thought they could just stroll into power this time and that explains the incredibly bad campaign they're running.Whoever is behind their billboards just doesn't have a clue.
H1's announcement of universal student benefits is smart - whether it is enough to swing that demographic (as they did last time) I wonder.
As for Hooten & Winni - why do I keep thinking of pots and kettles?

Great post Russell. Clear and accurate - thanks.
