  • Hard News: Awful in more than one way,

Sure Che: disabling a gunman with a roundhouse karate kick is a good way of stopping him (if you have one of those up your sleeve). But would you, in all seriousness, question the bravery (for this is what the chap at NRO is doing) of kids who were weren't quite up to rushing someone who is randomly killing them?

On the subject of bravery, (unmentioned in the blog post I linked to, I might add) Liviu Librescu, the 76 year old holocaust surviving professor, who lost his life barricading a door so his students could escape the shooting, was obviously plenty brave.

Something about his story makes me particularly, and irrationally, sad. Like there ought to be some sort of limit on the amount of evil that one person is expected to face in their life.

meanwhile, on the outer edges of the Lunisphere a blogger at National Review on line is wondering why the kids weren't brave enough to rush the guy.

He's not the only one either. What lovely people.

  • Hard News: The Civility Code,

    Craig,

I think that would be a really interesting idea too. I've often read through the - almost always terrible - comment threads at Comment is Free and wondered why the Guardian didn't try and reflect their letters' page policy on anonymity. (Presumably the time involved, I guess).

    Danyl,

What do you mean? Jordan's comment threads remain some of the best advertisements for the Labour Party on the internet (or, at least, some of the best reasons why you wouldn't want to see the other mob get into power) :)

    Neil, two words: Kuwait, Turkey

    Ridley,

There you go, the liberal left, so full of hatred for bland starchy meals that you are willing to defend perpetrators of nose-searing artificially green food over freedom, human rights and Decency. Shame on you.

    Re the Wasabist threat:

There is only one option. We must invade their countries, kill their chefs, and convert them to meat and three veg!

    (sorry)

    Juha,

please let me be the first to groan very loudly :)

    Neil,

Troops in Saudi were necessary for protecting oil supplies not the sanctions regime. Iran's border with Iraq is long and porous and their were no troops their. Yet sanctions we're effective enough.

    Neil,

A two and a half hour drive and a ferry journey later:

You mentioned the problem of the suffering caused by the sanctions, but this was already much diminished under the smart sanctions programme. Moreover, in my opinion, sanctions could have been further lifted (carefully and in a targeted manner). If combined with a continued rigorous inspections regime it would have been possible to do this and prevent SH from developing WMDs.

As for Harold Pinter, the guys a great play write but his politics are batty, and hardly representative of the left - thankfully. He was a prominent signatory to the free Milosovich petition!*%!?!

    Neil,

Arro watch is hardly obbsessive and creepy. Were it so, it would be highly unlikely that Arronovitch would link to it from his blog under the heading "Good Stuff". It's light hearted mostly, and often slightly tounge in cheek. It's also happy to give Aro credit when they think he has a fair point.
