Yes, Back Benches is in precisely the same boat - 20 eps funded (as opposed to our previous 52 weeks per year, which was nice), and with the election at the end of next year, we could well finish on August 28th (we started later than Media 7 this year) and not restart until July or something so we can run through til November... watch this space.
Best of luck to you and the team in the downtime.

Hey Judith - thank you - and would love your help/involvement. Fire me an email to damian at urs.net.nz (mind the spelling of my first name, but I'm sure as a teacher you're good with that stuff) and we'll see what we can do together. Thanks!

I drive through that crossing all the time (we talking about the painted white lines across the free left turn onto St Lukes Rd from the motorway off-ramp?), having just got off the motorway at St Lukes. I keep an eye out for cyclists for that exact reason, but I expect the cyclists to do the same. A motorist can see a person wandering up to a crossing, and looking both ways, but a cyclist whizzing across as if it were an automatic assumption… well I’ve almost taken one out before. I’m happy to eschew the right to make the cyclist get off and walk, but to make it an automatic right to cycle across might remove the cautionary approach…

Sacha has nicely addressed the point I was going to make above about it not being quite so simple as saying "great, more power down there, we can shut the stations down up here". Massive losses due to transmission, and not the capacity to move it northwards either apparently. Or so I've been told in the past when I've suggested the same thing.
But Sacha also comes up with some good answers. And I'd LOVE to see Tim Shadbolt trying to gleefully explain what Invercargill's global data centre cluster is all about... :)

You've been such an awesome help Deb, and that film night last year with your Year 13 students' work was a real "aha!" moment - proof that there IS great content out there being made by young people. Up til that point I was quietly worried there might not be :)
77 bugs found and fixed this weekend - which is apparently exactly how it's supposed to go - better to find them now! Hoping to be live by Wednesday for my appearance on Media 3!

For something to be “Age Appropriate” an “Adult” must approve content ….
My main reason for requiring content to be moderated is not so much about censoring what the kids are making and so forth - I just think the support I enjoy from schools and teachers would be short lived if a few little sods decide it would be funny to upload hardcore porn to the site and I didn't spot it for a bit...

My 14 year old makes short zombie movies in his spare time.
I'm not super fussed about it - if it's being made by a 14 year old, and it doesn't make you seriously consider where you've gone wrong as a parent, then it's probably okay. Gotta be careful with the underage sex stuff, obviously, don't want to be the next Pavement. But Zombies? Bring it, I reckon.
Kids making violent videos is nothing new, probably as old as playing Cowboys & Indians - I found a 'Spot On' school video competition from the early 80s where they were bemoaning how many entries were too violent to play on TV. What probably seems cool and outrageous to them - a massive fake gunfight, Die Hard style, seems like a waste of time to me, but I'm not going to ban it - but nor am I going to stick a 'featured' label on it and place it at the top of the homepage.
That spot is reserved for Odette Benoit, at least for the first few weeks. :)

It could fit really well with a Mashup competition we're running for secondary schools
Hey - Bruce yeah part of the plan is to work alongside any number of existing competitions out there, and figure out a 'media' angle that works. So for example Rockquest, I'd like to be able to have a music video competition that runs alongside it (and me and the Rockquest folks are talking next week about that!). Might be a bit late to get anything alongside Mashup this year, but stay in touch re anything else - APN also keen to do stuff with their regional papers, which could work with you too.

Damion; Any chance to get news of this around my media teacher networks before I head to the US on Sunday?
Geoff - Yes. Drop me a line damian.christie@gmail.com ? Let me know what you need. Also, can I have your wife's details, I'd like to include her on the small beta group if she's keen.

I want to be able to say to her, “It’s never going to be that hard again. Adults don’t behave like that.”
Sure, they do, but you're generally not forced to share a small room with the ones who do, for hours at a time, day in, day out, without legal recourse. If you are being forced to do that, congratulations, you're in prison.
School is cruel punishment if you're unusual.
