Immigration linked xenophobia is neither a right wing nor a left wing phenomena. In Europe at the moment, its coming from the right (as it has here in the past), while in NZ at the moment its coming from the left (and which ever part of the spectrum Winston currently occupies).
And the line about immigrants making it difficult for Aucklanders is a joke. Auckland's own policies on new housing has made life difficult for Aucklanders, but as often in the past, its easier to blame immigrants.

Hard News: Standing together, in reply to
Maybe its time for Lawyers to develop a moral/ethical framework then - otherwise they are just 'guns for hire', which is not what we should expect of professionals whose training has cost the public purse a lot of money

After reading this, a couple of things occur to me. Firstly, the Minister was quoted as saying she would favour "performance pay for schools", but actually those words were put in her mouth. Secondly, she seems to be saying that the system currently funds a whole lot of things that people broadly agree do not encourage better learning and she is responding by saying that she would be interested in looking for ways to get the money to the things that do assist student learning. (Which might be better teachers, new types of technology, she does not elaborate). And ""yes" we need some sort of testing to know whether students are learning or not and "no" she does not explain herself at all well.

Russell, I thought this a good article on the LB story, one of the best. You point out that the numbers given are so unrealistic - I cannot work out why anyone takes them seriously. I too have had room upgrades, but have never thought of them as a gift. Some restaurants give little freebies during a meal - is that a gift. I would say not. While I think LB has acted in a less than desirable way on a number of matters, I don't think letting someone upgrade you is worth bothering about frankly.

Also, I think the Cunliffe result was pretty predictable. Certainly most pundits were predicting it. But the catamaran race - that was breath-taking. So "yes" the news bulletins got it right, I think.

Excellent article - which leaves me wondering, who in their right mind would have asked David Farrar to be on the appointment panel for a CEO?
