  • Hard News: Go Us,

Sage - may I call you that?

Platitudes, platitudes, platitudes. 29pages of them. Can I at least have a nice side salad with just a drizzle of balsamic and a nice glass of wine with mine?

Sorry, but I just don't get an old rich white guy spouting change. Maybe in some parallel universe but surely not here on planet earth? And, Palin. OMFG. Dubya with boobs, lipstick, high heels and waving a hockey stick. Oh sassier, that's true, prettier, again true, but George W nonetheless. Scrape away the Fay Wray meets Erin Brockovich makeover and what is there left? Duplicity, half truths, bridges to nowhere and the faint whiff of nail polish remover. Georgies Girl.

Surely Americans will not sleepwalk to the polling booths again, high on the fumes of nail polish remover and vote for another refrain of the same tired old pop song? Surely not?

    "Beam me up Scottie!"

The witty, charming and at times acerbic Mr Ranapia likes to quote Jane's (and let's face it, who doesn't?) wonderful and equally charming and witty Mr Bennett, myself, I usually turn to George W who has a quote for every ocassion, methinks.

"If a person doesn't have the capacity that we all want that person to have, I suspect hope is in the far distant future, if at all"

Excuse me waiter, where is that side salad?

  • Hard News: Go Us,

I didn't think the Palin speech was wooden but it lacked something, umm perhaps her own voice. I didn't get the impression that I was really hearing anything from her, it was all spin and attack from the speech writing machine of Dubya. It appealed well to the group that it was intended for - but what is going to happen when she faces the media and has to meet voters who don't cheer and clap on cue. That will be the real test.

Despite the praise coming her way for that speech, it simply, in my mind anyway, raised more questions than answers.

I don't think I know her any better today, than I did yesterday.

  • Speaker: The Olympic Learning Curve,

I would add another to the list - when did women hammer and discus competitors become so well ummmm errrrr slim and shapely?

They do seem to have completely changed shape in matter of couple of olympics. Or maybe that is just my remembrances playing tricks on me.

  • Up Front: The Innocent Sleep,

I did a few months of night shift. At times I was unable to sleep during the day, so I would have a couple of hours in the morning, get up and get a couple of hours (if I was lucky) in the evening. I became very tired, so tired that at times I would literally feel the energy drain from me as if I was sitting in a bath and had pulled the plug. My brain was marshmallow.

Shortly after I finished doing night shifts full time I became absolutely convinced that I had lead paint poisoning and would spend hours pouring over the internet and books about this condition and the symptoms. Then I would pace for hours worrying about the poisoning and my death and nothing could shift this thought from my head. Obsessed. I went to my GP and insisted that he test my blood for lead levels, which to his credit he agreed to.

After about 6 weeks my body adjusted back to normal rhythms I began sleeping and suddenly realised that the lead paint poisoning rubbish was just that utter rubbish.

  • Field Theory: Handle the Scandal,

I am with the TVNZ message board, pretty poor coverage so far.

I must admit I have Michael Phelps fatigue. Sheesh I understand that he is great, do I need to be told that every few minutes. Please NZ win a medal so we can stop the MP obsession please!

Watching the rowing last night was agonising.

I mute Lavina. I FEEL good about that!

  • Speaker: Festive Fare,

Long time reader, first time poster. I had lots to say about Mr Veitch, but others said it better so decided my first dipping of toes in the water would be about the ff.

Off for the 2 weeks, I have 51 films to see. I have seen 19 thus far. My highlights have been Ashes of Time, simply beautiful, Wong Kar Wai is one of my favourite directors. Other highlights include -
    Man on Wire
    Stranded............
    Sukiyaki Western Django
    Up the Yangtze.
    My Winnipeg

Having seen it, I would rather chew my right arm off than ever see Ira Sach's Married Life again. Ugh!
