  • Hard News: Judicial caprice is no way to…, in reply to Alfie,

When you click on Ms Gisler's profile it's completely blank. That surely tells you something.

Not really - all the profiles for the Crown team solicitors are blank.

  • Speaker: Abortion: morality and health, in reply to kiwi_guy,

Adoption is an alternative to parenthood, not pregnancy.

  • Hard News: Nelson Street: Not too…, in reply to Oliver Roberts - AKLCouncil,

Frankly, NZers are pretty terrible at keeping left when moving slow/sharing spaces. Go to a mall & watch the escalators for a few minutes. I'd include some kind of marker or signage.

  • Hard News: The other kind of phone tapping, in reply to Paul Campbell,

Dobbing in my parents, but Mum & Dad took $5 worth of 1 & 2c coins to the US in 1981 as they'd been told they'd work in phones & laundromats in the place of dimes & nickels. Then they ended up living in a tiny town where they were well known as the only Kiwis, so couldn't use the NZ coinage.

Family legend has it that when they got snowed in at Reno on the way home, they played the slot machines until they started winning back copper, then left with the US change.

  • Hard News: The greening of the Red Zone,

    Attachment

I popped by Mum & Dad's former place on my birthday (the 22nd). Luckily the tree on the front fenceline is distinctive, so it's easy to spot :)

  • Hard News: Te Reo Māori in schools:…, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

Those coloured sticks are called Cuisinaire rods, though I have no idea if they're still used.

My experience was pretty much the same as Lucy Stewart's, through to Form 2 (mandatory Maori & Japanese at intermediate level, don't remember any Japanese). I decided to do German, and later Spanish, at high school, mostly for something new. I liked learning Maori, even if the most I do with it these days is translate the compound word place names I come across on roadtrips.

One thing I know from studying several languages, it's not just about the words. You learn about different ways of life, social customs, history etc. Even with the little that I picked up during primary school helped with understanding lessons in English, Social Studies & History later on, and with life in general.

  • Speaker: Not even a statistic, in reply to Rosemary McDonald,

Sure, it's legal to defend yourself against an attacker. But at that point, you're being attacked. The point of most of the magical thinking is to ensure you're not a target for an attack, and that's something that you can't always prevent, because it's the result of someone else's decision making. It's out of your hands.

It's also far more likely that an attacker will escalate violence if the victim fights back. Teaching girls and women self-defence skills and coping mechanisms can be a good back-up, but all too often, those are the only things that get focussed on.

  • Hard News: Hope and Wire,

I can't even watch the ads for it. But then, I can't stand any sort of ceremonial thing to do with the earthquakes now. I've started taking leave for the 22nd & hiding in bed all day, because I get irrationally angry at the flowers in the traffic cones. If I go outside, I'll end up punching a busker or something. And that's my birthday. Do you know what it feels like to not want to celebrate your birthday ever again? I'm there.

Knowing that it's meant for people in other areas of the country makes me feel a little better, but overall, I'd rather not know this thing exists at all.

  • Feed: Meals for Me, in reply to Sue,

Oh, yes. Some days I just go for soup & toast/crackers. Cream of mushroom or good old tomato never fails.

  • Access: Your Relationship With Disability,

    C) I have a few friends with bipolar disorder, and hearing and sight impairments of varying degrees.
    G) Like lesley mclean says, there's always more to learn.
    H) Other - I work in the healthcare industry, though I'm not involved in patient care or policy making, so I have very little influence.
