Numbers at Nambassa, Russell: - I was there and topless (you drew more attention if you weren't) - and there were certainly thousands of people there. I seem to remember hearing that there were 70,000. In an enormous and tightly packed space, we were so far away from the stage at the Split Enz concert that we could barely see the band - the lighting was wonderful though and so was the sound.

Tom, you make it sound as though having lost our remotes we're all forced to watch a single channel. It may err on the side of 'earnestness' but I think TV7 provides a better balance than most. As for 'passion and urgency'?? You find this where? Reality TV? Cooking shows?

why is each of these rights limited to media, and is the denial of these rights to other New Zealanders justifiable in 2012?For me Graeme's question raises the issue of the decline of investigative journalism. How can the media serve the needs of readers when there is very little scope for reliable and objective investigation because, I understand, of staff reductions? In line with the cheap and easy 'reality show' principle that has taken over tv entertainment, investigation in the media seems largely to have been replaced by cheap and easy opinion.

For what its worth, I think the way forward for Labour’s new leader is one entirely consistent with its traditions. It would involve a focus on jobs, jobs, jobs. Just as the Greens’ identity is grounded in its advocacy for the environment, Labour’s raison d’etre has always been work opportunities and better conditions for Kiwi battlers and the hard pressed middle class.

Nonetheless, Labour must learn to co-operate with the Greens in Opposition if anyone is to believe the two parties can co-operate in government. The Greens are not vote-stealers, they are a genuine political movement presently doing a very good job for itself.
Russell – I so very much agree with you. Labour and the Greens are allies – we’re on the same side – with a different emphasis perhaps. We should be working together – talking – not making assumptions about each other. For Labour to accuse the Greens of vote-stealing is to shoot ourselves in the other foot.
