Absolutely. I am a voter who for the first time ever have felt very disillusioned with parties and really, really , really questioning voting. Reading this gave me some hope ----- these are the things I am interested in, real stuff, people's lives that need some care and attention.

Yep scary stuff. I listened to Karyn Hayon Radio Live last night and she was clear and got it and was strong about that, though some of the others just don't- JT and co are quite extreme in their ability to completely not get it. What kind of dad's do they make I wonder.
Makes me feel quite sick actually, like really sad. -

Surely we can expect that journalists have the capacity for both, or have a dual covering of the situation. I am sorry , but from a lay person's point of view journalists not understanding just doesn't cut it. They should seek the right knowledge.

Hi A friend who teaches at a decile 1 school just told me this tale. Class news, Birthday. The child gets given $40.00 for her birthday from her uncle.. She is very happy. Her news is that he mum needed it to take the washing to the laundomat.
She tells her news in a usual way, not upset, this si the way life is. This is the reality for so many of our children. So don't make light of it
And it's kind of refreshing ( not in an ideal way)_, none of that precious I want the new ipad or new nikes. -
Well it seems that the question should be why are there such large differences when looking at the results of Pasifika and Maori students in particular.
This information has been around for a long time, so National Standards don't help provide any solutions. Looking at schools that move kids along faster, that can help, but not by making it a comptetitive thing.
Also the focus on measurement of only a few areas. Professor Gluckman has stated that children being able to self regulate is one of the most important factors in developing a more cohesive social society. Schools are not having time to focus on this due to the pressure placed by national standards. Look at who is being stood down. We are looking at complex issues here.
England tried this method of measurement and it has failed miserably there, so why are we doing this.
I think the current debate about poverty and the results in lower Decile schools should be looked at . I don't understand why we are not directly debating those links. It's not the whole answer, but come on.
Also how teacher training stacks up these days, the quality of it, the depth of it, the time to practice while training. -
Well yes I work in Decile 1 schools in a great area. I work in schools that are leading the way in e- learning, yes decile 1 schools. I also work with great kids and families. And some families are struggling. While John Hattie statistics about class size are interesting, even he states that socio/economic status has a huge impact on childrens' learning. It is huge and that seems to be forgotten about by the government.
What makes me feel less great about NZ is the 'white flight' and the assumptions made about some others by the majority. There is a huge equity issue here. Ors funding, assistive tech funding etc- all stated to be way less in decile 1 schools. Why? I think it's because the schools are trying so hard to help the children and families meet their basic needs they don't have time for those extra.
I hate to think we are have become a country of looking only after our immediate own and not seeing what we can learn and gain from diversity.
