The Enemy sound very much like the Stooges here. Also Craig Robertson has a great theory about Dunedin 'Enemy-to-The Clean' era and that venerated local craft store Maud's Fabric Barn - but I'd have to let him tell it.

Great post Grant, thanks. I remember the J &MC gig really well especially for seeing Straitjacket Fits as the incredible support act. Lots of other gigs to remember, the Chills playing around 86 (after Leather Jacket) was great, the Clean of course and of the overseas bands I remember Shriekback playing a blinder. A few years ago one of my students was the music editor at Critic and was existed about interviewing Finn Andrews as the Veils were about to play at Sammy's. I told her I'd see Finn's father play in Shriekback at the same venue 25 years earlier. Her look of dis-interest was withering.

Nice tribute Grant. There've been so many wonderful comments and memories about Peter in the last 24 hours, I can't add much more. However, I remember a significant moment in the complex Dunedin-Auckland dynamic when, on the legendary series Gloss, the character Damien (played by another sadly departed iconic talent - Kevin Smith) impressed Chelsea Redfern by playing Buddy on his tape deck.

Yeah I like Rheineck back in the 80s. It was the beer of freedom and rock awards.

I remember drinking at a neon monstrosity on the corner of Kent Tce and Majoribanks St - the ground floor of the Clemenger Ad agency I think. Plastic palm trees and blue cocktails - just the place for arts reporters who wished they were tough.

Wonderful piece, thanks for writing. Peter (and Graeme)'s music has been seriously undervalued for 30 years. Before I left NZ in April I did my bit with a TKP song in the 'Best Song Ever' segment of Jim Mora's RNZ show. But it's great to hear Peter's later work also.
Cheers, Donald Reid
