This is a blatant plug, but for those interested in hearing a bit more about how different brains work you might like to listen (or watch) this interview we did on Nine to Noon with Sue Haldane who uses theater to demonstrate the thought processes of people with ASD, ADHD, etc: http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/ninetonoon/audio/201817128/what's-going-on-in-the-minds-of-children-with-neurological-disorders

Polity: House-buying patterns in Auckland, in reply to
Apologies if the question has already been asked but couldn’t the "magic money" gap be accounted for by pre-bubble homeowners in Auckland who haven't jumped on the property ladder? I mean there must be a decent proportion of owners who took out a mortgage in the mid 90s-early 2000s and have then seen their house valuation skyrocket without increasing debt.

Hi Mark, do you mind saying specifically what you asked for under the OIA? From the text of those replies it looks like they are refusing to even give a basic dollar figure which is odd given that info is already public...
BTW I looked into the cost of academic journal subscriptions for Radio NZ earlier this year. The figures for the CRI's are included down the bottom of the page if you're interested.
You'll see they are generally much lower than the universities. That's apparently because they a.) need fewer journals and b.) don't have to purchase the rights for nearly as many people.

Hard News: A law gone awry, in reply to
Almost unbelievably Ibogaine was approved under a National Government. We can only hope they don’t do an about-face given their current approach.
The coroner is currently looking into a case in the far north where a woman died while using Ibogaine. It'll be interesting to see what recommendations are made...

Oh I should have pointed out: NAEAC is the official watchdog for animal testing.

Hard News: A law gone awry, in reply to
The opposition to animal testing isn't just coming from politicians and animal activists. The president of the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee is on record saying she'd personally prefer a total ban to animal testing of synthetic cannabis.
The level of animal testing needed to prove low risk isn't insignificant. A toxicologist told N2N yesterday it would probably require three different species of animals (probably rats, rabbits and dogs) and involve high doses being given over a period of months, including to pregnant animals.

Russel, have you considered approaching Radio NZ's Youth Online team? They might be interested in something along the lines of Media 3.

OnPoint: H4x0rs and You, in reply to
Got disagree with you about Gina Rinehart’s Fairfax shenanigans. As far as I can see journalists have opposed her influence, which if anything suggests the public should trust them more.

Ah I see. No worries.

It's not really acceptable that the journalist would write a story re-casting that person as a villain without checking back with the person who recommended him to ask "hey, this guy you put me onto -- is he a bad guy?"
I agree Russel but I wanted to check that conversation actually did happen rather than assuming it didn't.
