God I remember getting a job at The Listener by writing a pompous letter. Embarrassing really. Why do they never tell you to do that at school careers evenings?
The other part there, from a staff point of view, is that Murray felt that food was extremely important on deadline and we’d down tools and go eat. It was usually Wun Loy, up on Hobson St, or the Mekong on Wellesley St, on the other side of the block the RIU building was in. Crucial part of deadline.
Food is essential to any fringe creative endeavour that can't afford to pay people properly. Nothing's more bonding than a late night dash to a quality dodgy restaurant. You'll do anything for people that feed you.

I was intrigued to see The Dead C on the list at Laneway. Plainly a glitch in the matrix. Less surprising but equally heartening is Mitski.

That could almost be it. I just found that myself and it seems it was posted only two months ago. Syl playing piano and all! I see Johansen anticipated the Icelandic football team by 35 years too. God bless German television is all I can say.

The thing that impressed me most about Barry Jenkin other than his is irreproachable dude-ness was that he was a man of strong opinions, not all of them entirely sane. There's a transgressive thrill about the ability to say what you REALLY think on national television without breaking character. We did get to see a lot more Little Feat than was strictly necessary but I remember him hyperventilating about this clip of David Johansen doing "Frenchette" in a small club somewhere and my God it was epic. Who knows where it is now. I'd pay money to see that again.
I hope Kidjo's "Remain in Light" is as good in reality as it is in my head. I'd better listen on the weekend.
Speaking of strong opinions, I'm boosting the new Tracey Thorn as the best thing she's ever done. It's got the toughness and tempos required and it's a love letter to analog synthesis.

Apropos this came today with the new Hop Along album (recommended) from Saddle Creek Records in the States. Imagine getting this with Frampton Comes Alive in 1976. It's verging on pathos.

I'm bemused about vinyl 2.0 but on balance I'm glad. The prices are getting heinous but it's so nice to hold new music in your hands again. And there's the hilarity of finding immaculate $50 re-pressings of records you last saw in the dollar bin at Silvio's.

Whither the pensioners? Winston rode to notoriety on a walking frame yet there's been very little talk about them in discussions.

Sad to hear of the end of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn but perhaps we should be grateful it was there as long as it was. It was originally created as a temporary pop-up to give Hallertau a presence in the city. The brewery talked ex-Matterhorn partner Sam Chapman into doing it even though he was reluctant to return to hospo. (No such luck for Sam of course, he's now running the Sherwood in Queenstown.) Matterhorn architect Al Cox designed the fit out with splendid discretion. We came up and played there once, thank you Matthew! I shall miss it as much as Auckland will.
