An excellent submission Graeme. Thank you.
And I would add that a moral, education approach to littering from Kindergarten School on-wards is essential. We must all be taught/shown that litter here goes there .. into gutters, rivers, the sea; into animals.
I collect litter very walk [in a plastic bag re-used again and again] along the beach, QE Park and sometimes roads in Peakakariki where I live, but there is just too much to do other than an occasional pick up along the waterfront or streets of Wellington. -
How young you all are!.My first memory that made sense was the light, happy feeling around at home and in the neighbourhood when WW 2 ended and there was a celebration party at the local school and I ate bread and dripping for the first time and thought it delicious [and my mother was mortified as she had tried so hard to provide healthy food].
My next major news memories are the victory of the Chinese Red Army, and the establishment of the State of Israel both in 1948; then photos of US soldiers playing "soccer" with N Korean heads in 1953; and the film/photo of Syngman Rhee himself [I think, or his top General], shooting a kneeling, bound N Korean soldier in the back of his head. I was a sickened then, as now of ISIS murders.
More happily the inauguration of Jomo Kenyatta as the first President of Kenya.in 1964.
Interest in Politics has been deeply part of me all my life.
And, alas, I am not optimistic about the future of our beautiful, interseting, precious planet. -
Speaker: Happy Race Relations Day, in reply to
Thank you Mark, but I supported the Bastion Point protesters. I don't know that the young people in PN were concerned by Bastion Point at all: they did not put a context for their unpleasantness.

Unpleasant racism lingers in the heart/memory when experienced by anyone.
I arrived in NZ in January 1977, a real hot summer in Palmerston North: such an amazing contrast to the grey freezing England I had left in December. I was walking up Rangitikei Street full of happiness when a group of three Maori, two men, one woman, abreast, walking in the opposite direction taking up the entire pavement width, spat at me and nastily "said" "Pakeha!".
In UK I had grown up with anti-semitism as a subtle background. Perhaps as a result I was involved with all anti-racism movements of the times [from Korea to Algeria, Vietnam,South Africa etc].and had had friends or acquaintances from around the world. It was a shock to have experienced a racist epithet [as this was meant to be] is this country. -
That was such beautiful writing Fiona. So very sad .. and utterly stupid.
The very best wishes to you and Claudia .. and Trevor who sounds a great man.
Send your blog to your MP and whoever the Minister is who would deal with this situation which is the result of their policy. -
Thank you Damian for a very enjoyable post and video clips.

Hard News: Superannuation: Back to the Future, in reply to
Forgive me Richard in that I cannot quote sources, but I know from much reading around medical and complementary health and other sources that what I say is correct. If you listen to National Radio even, you will hear at times that the incidence of even auto-immune Type 1 Diabetes has increased by 10-15% in the last 20 years.Similarly with Cancers, other auto-immune diseases. Just listen, look.

Also, don't accept so easily that life expectancy will continue increasing because it has increased so far.
For reasons of poor diets and environmental toxins of all sorts [and bacterial resistance to antibiotics], people are more unwell now than before. Thus Type 11 diabetes in children and teens .. and there will be a limit on renal dialysis or kidneys available for transplants.
"Our" life expectancy is likely to begin decreasing fairly soon, certainly good Quality of Life [QOL].
And Climate Change will have its own hazards.
I don't want to sound so negative .. I just think what I say is real. -
I think it takes some courage to commit one's ideas on to this Public Address site.
Responses to essay contributions and comments can be very acerbic or even contemptuous. So well done, and good luck.
